The programs are guided by researchers at the Department of Biological Sciences, Institute for Protein Research, Research Institute of Microbial Diseases, Genome Information Research Center, Frontier Biosciences, and three affiliated institutes outside the university.

- The Department of Biological Sciences from Osaka University was reorganized in 1996 by combining two departments, Physiology and Biochemistry, both of which had been founded in 1953.
