Position Summary

Join the Ramily! Work with a friendly campus community as one of our Building Environmental Service Technicians! This is a Custodian/Housekeeper role responsible for cleaning and disinfecting campus buildings.

Responsibilities include:

  • Daily routine cleaning and resupply of assigned work areas
  • Basic cleaning functions include, but are not limited to: sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, and removing trash.
  • Filling dispensers (such as tissue and soap dispensers) to appropriate amounts with proper product
  • Clean restroom floors, commodes, urinals, sinks, mirrors, and dispensers
  • Detail cleaning of assigned area, such as dusting and glass cleaning
  • Project-related tasks such as floor care, deep restroom cleaning, and occasional custodial outdoor tasks
  • Submit supply requests on a regular basis as directed by supervisor
  • Turn laundry in for regular cleaning, monitor equipment for malfunction, and correct minor equipment issues such as replacing vacuum bags or filters
  • Collaborate with peers, assisting where needed, sharing resources and information, and by providing excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Communicate professionally with other staff members, complete mandatory forms such as sign in/sign out for attendance and university property/equipment.
  • Maintaining a healthy and safe working environment by reporting equipment malfunctions, adhering to safety standards, and labelling and storing materials appropriately.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The purpose of this organizational unit is to provide basic, detail and project-specific housekeeping services to all University buildings.

Position required to work during periods of adverse weather or other emergencies: All - Emergency and Pandemic on site
Position required to work On-Call/Emergency Callback: Yes
Minimum Experience/Education: Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special certification may be required for some of these positions.

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies

  • Knowledge - Technical (75%): Includes, but is not limited to, daily routine/detail cleaning and resupply of assigned work areas in a timely manner. Performs basic cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, removing trash, etc. Fills dispensers, such as tissue and soap dispensers with the proper product and appropriate amounts. Clean restrooms (to include sweeping and mopping floors, commodes and urinals, sinks, mirrors and dispensers). Detail cleaning of assigned area, high and low dusting, glass/lobbies. Project-related tasks such as floor care, deep restroom cleaning, and occasional custodial related outdoor tasks are expected to be performed as directed. Improvement of cleaning performance is stressed and should be accomplished while adhering to departmental practices regarding green cleaning policies/processes, safety policies, and assigned routines. Staff members are also expected to perform absentee coverage as directed. Staff members are expected to submit supply requests on a predetermined date as directed by supervision while utilizing departmental request forms. Staff members are also expected to utilize only chemicals and supplies provided by the university department. Laundry should be turned in for cleaning and retrieved per supervisory direction on a regular basis (as defined by supervision) and staff members are expected to monitor equipment status for malfunctions and submit updated information to the supervisor and/or team leader on a regular basis while advising them on changes to equipment locations and providing feedback when repair is needed. Staff members will also be expected to be able to diagnose the correct minor equipment issues (e.g., vacuum cleaner bags/filters) and clean equipment/closets per departmental schedule.
  • Interpersonal Skills (10%): Communicates with colleagues and customers in a manner that allows work to be completed. Offers to assist co-workers when needed and shares knowledge, resources, etc. to reach common goals. Acknowledges the importance of others’ opinions and ideas and offers suggestions to improve work output. Attends and seeks out training to further enhance skills. Specifically, displaying a positive attitude during day-to-day interactions with co-workers, students, faculty and staff and avoiding behavior that is considered disruptive to departmental processes and/or functions.
  • Customer Service (5%): Greets customers professionally and courteously. Receive visitors and the general public in a courteous, professional, and helpful manner daily. Contacts the supervisor for any person requesting access without a university issued badge and turns in lost items to responsible personnel. Maintains a positive attitude and demeanor daily and displays excellent customer service skills to colleagues, students, staff, and visitors. Knows the role of clients in the work environment.
  • Communication (5%): Clearly and concisely conveys verbal, non-verbal (sign language, body language, gestures), or written information and ideas to individuals or groups to ensure they understand the message. Listens and responds appropriately to messages from others. Expected to engage in electronic and written communication to ensure completion of mandatory forms and documents to include (but not limited to) proper signing in/out for attendance purposes daily and signing in/out of university property (ex: keys/radios/etc.). Performs computer-related tasks as assigned, such as digital time reporting, online training, performance appraisal tasks and reading/acknowledgement of messages from the university/department.
  • Safety and Health Compliance (5%): Demonstrates an understanding of and maintains conditions that ensure a healthy and safe working environment. Makes sure equipment is working properly and report malfunctions of equipment as they occur. Adheres to University safety and health standards wearing appropriate issued personal protective equipment (PPE), supplies and materials. This includes (but not limited to) proper labeling of bottles and shelves, paper products on a pallet or shelf space in a neat and orderly fashion, cleaning cloths folded and stored neatly on shelves and soiled linen put away appropriately or returned to the appropriate location for laundering. Attends/completes departmentally assigned training as directed.
