The department of Facilities Management at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Building Maintenance Trades Specialist I.
About the Opportunity:
Under the direction of the Operations Manager and/or Trades Specialist II Lead, performs various tasks in general construction and building maintenance type work. What You’ll Do:
- Performs maintenance duties as related to carpentry, such as fabrication and repair of casework and furniture; installation and repair of floors, ceilings, window coverings, doors, trim, locksets, windows, AC units, and ventilation fans.
- Installs and repairs drywall, insulation, trims, moldings; fabricates and installs walls, concrete forms, ramps, scaffolding, shelters, steps, platforms, handrails, wheelchair ramps, barricades, ladders, crates, pallets; installs interior and exterior walls, partitions, paneling, siding, and wall coverings. Performs minor painting duties related to carpentry tasks.
- Performs troubleshooting and maintenance duties as related to electrical, such as replacing light switches, ballasts, outlets, sockets, lamping, motor repair, resetting breakers, and repairing lighting systems.
- Performs troubleshooting and maintenance duties as related to plumbing, such as repairing faucets, clearing drains, replacing traps, repairing steam components, tightening packing, repairing flush valves, and replacing commode seats.
- Performs general maintenance duties as related to HVAC, such as calibrating temperature controls, changing V-belts, and minor repairs to appliances, AC, and HV units. Operates as a First Responder to issues like odors, leaks, tripped breakers, and plugged drains.
- Erects working platforms including scaffolding, ladder jacks, extension ladders; operates motorized aerial platforms and lifts; ensures safety procedures are followed and works at heights exceeding ten feet.
- Requisitions parts and supplies from Warehouse and Tool Crib, operates state vehicles.
- Performs scheduled and preventive maintenance on equipment, including inspections, filter changes, lubrication, belt adjustments, coil cleaning, and plumbing maintenance.
- Maintains clean work area and performs other duties as required by supervisor; wears appropriate clothing as per policy.
- Performs general maintenance duties related to normal responsibilities or assisting other trades like electrical, plumbing, sheet metal, millwright, and grounds work.

Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Must have one of the following: 2 years experience in general trades building maintenance; completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or craft trade; completion of a 2-year accredited vocational craft trades program; or equivalent combination of education and experience. All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- A minimum of two (2) years general trades building maintenance experience in basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other craft trades.
- Ability to read blueprints, operate a computer, follow OSHA guidelines, maintain attendance, read and write in English, perform basic math, distinguish colors, learn policies quickly, operate state vehicles, climb ladders over ten feet, lift over 75 pounds, bend, stoop, walk, crawl, work in inclement weather, cramped areas, hear instructions, and operate hand and power tools.
Physical Demands:
- Lifting, bending, stooping, crawling, climbing, standing, and walking; lifting materials over 50 pounds; working in hot/cold environments and outdoor conditions; utilizing various PPE.
Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License.
