Bus Driver
Position Summary
The bus driver is responsible for the safe operation of Rice University buses and for providing excellent transportation and customer service to the Rice community and visitors. The driver must be an ambassador to the Rice community and must be tactful at all times. The driver will provide detailed information to passengers on campus events, parking, buildings, and METRO information as needed. S/he must stay up to date with all university policies and regulations, as well as state and federal transportation and traffic rules.
Workplace Requirements
On-campus position: This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change. This role is classified as an essential position, requiring on-site presence to effectively carry out its vital functions.
Hourly Hiring Salary
$18.20. Non-Exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements
- No formal education
- Six months of related bus driving experience
Skills
- School bus driving skills and experience dealing with students, staff, and visitors on a regular basis
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with customers
- Ability to serve as a strong ambassador for the university
- Basic computer knowledge
- Commercial bus driving skills
- Ability to work with diverse individuals and provide relevant information
- Must possess and maintain a Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement, with no more than three (3) moving violations or at-fault accidents in the past three years, and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) within the past 10 years
Preferences
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong related bus driving experience
- Ability to clean and sweep buses
Essential Functions
- Transports university community members and guests
- Follows safety rules and complies with traffic regulations to operate vehicles in a safe and courteous manner
- Provides embarking and disembarking assistance to passengers as needed
- Maintains order among passengers during trips to ensure safety
- Provides detailed information to passengers about campus events, parking, buildings, and METRO information as needed
- Checks the condition of a vehicle's tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water, and safety equipment to ensure everything is in working order
- Reports any bus malfunctions or needed repairs
- Maintains knowledge of first-aid procedures
- Prepares and submits reports that may include the number of passengers or trips, hours worked, mileage, and fuel consumption
- Performs all other duties as assigned
