POSITION DETAILS

The Business Development Manager reports to the Dean of the School of Engineering with dual reporting to the Senior Vice President (SVP) of the Office of Institutional Advancement, Communications & External Relations (OIACER), who also serves as the Executive Director of the Foundation for City College. This Manager plays a critical role in assisting the Dean and SVP in developing and executing CCNY’s strategy to maximize the commercial success of innovations developed with CCNY/CUNY and the Foundation for City College resources. This role involves developing, implementing, and managing research-driven entrepreneurial businesses, enterprises, and ventures that will return investment to the college through city, state, federal, and philanthropic partnerships.

(Campus-specific Information and duties)

  • Collaborates with the Dean of the School of Engineering and the SVP of OIACER in identifying and developing new business opportunities for growth and create marketing strategies to meet and exceed revenue goals.
  • Track emerging markets and trends, working with campus leadership and key stakeholders to implement marketing strategies and develop new opportunities.
  • Identify potential partnerships and pathways for the successful commercialization of college intellectual property.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with key stakeholders on campus, including businesses, community organizations, and professional networks.
  • Collaborates with the Dean of the School of Engineering and the SVP of OIACER in negotiating and managing agreements regarding all college patents and other rights in technologies, including interinstitutional, material transfer, and confidentiality agreements.
  • Draft, execute, and review license agreements with partner organizations.
  • Conduct targeted marketing and direct outreach with external organizations interested in technology commercialization.
  • Lead market research plans to identify new opportunities.
  • Continuously monitor and analyze market trends and competitor activities to refine strategies.
  • Track expenses and maintain the company budget.
  • Ensure the company meets revenue targets.
  • Collaborate with Dean of the School of Engineering and the SVP of OIACER in developing and pitching ideas to potential investors.
  • Foster and maintain an entrepreneurial growth culture throughout the college.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of the School of Engineering and the SVP of OIACER in leading the development and growth of community-oriented entrepreneurship programs, including strategic foresight, understanding community entrepreneurs’ needs, networking, and relationship building.
  • Collaborate with individual program managers and community stakeholders regarding budget, personnel, and strategic oversight.
  • Collect, track, and use data to evaluate business effectiveness.
  • Perform other position-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and six years' related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a STEM-related field.
  • Six (6) or more years of professional experience, preferably with direct experience as a founder, in a startup, corporate setting, or leading community-based entrepreneurship programs and managing IP license agreements.
  • Deep appreciation and experience with university research and a thorough working knowledge of intellectual property management.
  • Proven experience in developing entrepreneurship programming.
  • Strong familiarity with contemporary entrepreneurship issues, including finance, marketing, growth, and technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage budgets effectively.
  • Proficiency in data analysis for program evaluation and reporting.
  • Experience in applying for and managing grants from local, regional, state, and federal sources is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach to working with student entrepreneurs, faculty, professionals, and community partners.
  • Experience building networks to support initiatives and engage subject matter experts and key connections.
  • Proactive problem solver with exceptional decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and handle complex and confidential information.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Plans and manages College fundraising strategy and operations.

  • Implements and monitors comprehensive resource development program; makes recommendations to improve department policies and procedures
  • Fulfills specific goals and targets based on individual portfolio
  • Assists Director with developing funding strategies and assessing outcomes
  • Oversees annual and/or major gift activities to support strategic plan
  • Maintains relationships with donors and sponsoring organizations to cultivate and maintain funding
  • Prepares financial reports for management; may write grant proposals
  • May manage professional and/or clerical staff
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
