Call for Applications for a Research Grant for Master's Degree Students
The Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte) of Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon opens a call for a Research Grant for Master's Students, for research activities in Participation, Training and Innovation in Social Work, under the following conditions:
Scientific Area: Social Sciences
Admission requirements: Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related area that the jury considers appropriate for the competition and be enrolled in a Master's Degree in Social Social Work or a related area that the jury considers appropriate for the competition (according to Article 6 of the Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (Reg. No. 950/2019).
Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries require registration by a Portuguese institution, in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August, and Ordinance No. 33/2019, of 25 January. This type of scholarship is intended for those who are already enrolled, or who meet the necessary conditions to enroll, in a cycle of studies leading to the award of a master's degree. Candidates who do not have proof of enrollment in this cycle of studies at the date of application must include in their application a declaration under oath that they will be able to present this proof on the date of signing the contract.
Preferential factors:
Experience in the use of quantitative data analysis software such as Microsoft Excel and SPSS.
Good command of spoken and written English.
Work plan:
Research activities in the area of Participation, Capacity Building and Innovation in Social Work, contributing to the execution of different phases of research projects in this area. Activities will include support for the review and systematization of scientific literature and relevant documentation; the preparation, organization and monitoring of research and information collection activities; the treatment, organization and systematization of quantitative and/or qualitative data; the preparation of support materials for participatory activities, training, capacity building and intervention planned in the projects; as well as the preparation of reports, technical notes and other scientific and dissemination products.
Duration of the fellowship:
The fellowship has a duration of 6 months. The fellowship contract may eventually be renewed within the term of the research project and in accordance with the stipulations of point 4 of Article 6 of the Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. in force.

Workplace and scientific guidance:
The work will be carried out at CIES-Iscte/Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon, Avenida das Forças Armadas, 1649-026 Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of Dr. Jorge Manuel Ferreira.
Amount of the monthly maintenance allowance:
The amount of the scholarship corresponds to €1090.98 according to the table of values of the scholarships awarded by FCT, I.P. in the country (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf). The corresponding voluntary social insurance is added to the value of the subsidy, if the candidate chooses to be awarded, as well as personal accident insurance. The scholarship will be paid monthly, by bank transfer. The scholarship holder may also be reimbursed the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Insurance, in case of joining this scheme.
Selection methods:
The selection process will be developed based on the curricular evaluation. In the event that several candidates demonstrate that they have the right profile to carry out the work plan, the jury reserves the right to call the three best classified in the curricular evaluation for an interview that will have a weight of 50% in the final grade. If the jury considers it unnecessary to carry out interviews, the curricular evaluation will have a final weighting of 100%.
The curriculum evaluation criteria are based on:
a) in the academic career (30%);
b) in research experience (30%);
c) in the experience demonstrated in the items indicated in the preferential factors (40%).
The curricular evaluation of the candidates will be carried out in accordance with the indicated criteria, taking place on an entire scale between 0 and 100 points.
The jury reserves the right to:
- invite the candidate with the highest score to the position in question, following the order established in the final ranking list, whenever the selected candidate does not meet the requirements for the formalization of the contract or in case of unavailability;
- not award the scholarship in case none of the candidates corresponds to the desired profile.
Composition of the Selection Jury:
The selection of candidates will be made by a jury composed of: Jorge Manuel Ferreira (CIES-Iscte/Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon), who will chair, and by the members, Maria João Pena (CIES-Iscte/Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon and Pablo Álvarez (CIES-Iscte/Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon).
Form of publication/notification of results:
The final results of the evaluation will be published through the list of admitted and excluded and the final ranking list, and all candidates will be notified by email. The Interested Parties Hearing period takes place within 10 working days following the communication of the results.

The call is open from 14 to 25 September 2026.

- Other supporting documents deemed relevant, including letter(s) of recommendation.
