Scholarship Theme: The scholarships to be awarded will focus on research topics that are strategic for the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI) at Instituto Superior Técnico, namely:
- Multimodal AI
- Multi-objective optimization
- AI and distributed computing
- Analogical reasoning
- Explainable AI / reasoning
- User-centered design for health
Duration: 12 months
Maximum Duration Including Renewals: 12 months
Objectives
The work to be carried out under the scope of this fellowship aims to promote the sustained advancement of the research plan leading to the award of a PhD degree, contributing to the production of original scientific knowledge within the research areas of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI).
During the fellowship period, fellows are expected to consolidate the scientific and technical skills required for the autonomous conduct of research, deepen their understanding of the state of the art in their respective field, define or refine appropriate research methodologies, and obtain scientific results suitable for validation and dissemination within the international scientific community.
The fellowship also aims to ensure the continuity of research activities during critical stages of the doctoral journey, enabling fellows to devote themselves consistently to research, experimental development, validation of results, preparation of scientific publications, and the writing of their doctoral dissertation, according to the stage they have reached in their PhD programme.
Expected outcomes include, but are not limited to, the generation of original scientific contributions; the production of scientific articles, conference communications, prototypes, software, datasets, methodologies, models, or other research outputs relevant to the scientific domain concerned; as well as measurable progress in the work plan leading to the completion of the PhD degree.

Selection process
Contest Evaluation Method(s)
Plano de investigação weighted to 50% on a scale of 20 points.
Curricular evaluation weighted to 30% on a scale of 20 points.
Carta de motivação weighted to 20% on a scale of 20 points.
The minimum final grade needed for admission is 14 points.
Conditions for the Contest Evaluation
- The Curriculum Evaluation will be based on the candidate's Master's degree final grade, scientific output, participation in research teams, and other activities contributing to the enhancement of the candidate's academic and professional profile.
- The Research Plan Evaluation will assess the candidate's ability to demonstrate scientific maturity, a clear vision of the scientific objectives to be achieved, and well-defined, feasible goals.
- At the time of contract signature, all students must be formally admitted and enrolled in a PhD program (PhD in Computer Engineering Engineering at IST or PhD in Digital Media at IST).
- Proposals must be prepared and submitted by the students themselves.
- Each applicant may submit only one application.
- Providing false statements or committing acts of plagiarism are also grounds for excluding the application.
- The evaluation panel assigns a classification to each of the candidates on a scale of 0 to 20 points, ranking the candidates according to their classification consisting on the sum of the partial classifications assigned in each evaluation criterion, and considering the weighting factor given to each parameter. In this process abstentions are not allowed.
- In the event of a tie among candidates with the same highest evaluation score, the Evaluation Panel reserves the right to conduct interviews to have a more objective assessment of specific criteria.
- If an interview is conducted, the punctuation proposed by the evaluation panel is obtained by assigning a weighting factor of 80% to the previous evaluation criteria, and a weighting factor of 20% to the interview.
- Additionally, the evaluation panel retains the discretion to withhold the scholarship if the candidates fail to fulfil the stipulated requirements.
- Candidates with an average score below 14 are not recommended for hiring.
