Call for expression of interest
SENIOR OR MID-CAREER RESEARCHERS IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, DATA SCIENCE AND COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCES
AT THE PARIS BRAIN INSTITUTE
PARIS, FRANCE
The Paris Brain Institute (Institut du Cerveau) is an internationally renowned institute dedicated to advancing understanding of the brain and improving brain health across the whole spectrum of neurological and psychiatric disorders. It is home to 29 research teams bringing together over 1000 personnel, including 150 tenured researchers, 200 technical staff and 300 students and post-docs. The Institute is highly multidisciplinary with expertise including basic neuroscience, clinical neurology, population neuroscience, mathematics and computer science. It has 12 cutting-edge core facilities for data generation across various scales and modalities (genomics, proteomics, imaging, behavior...). The Institute is located on the campus of the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital, in central Paris, the largest hospital in Europe for brain disorders and many hospital clinicians are also investigators of the Institute. As part of its scientific strategy development plan, the Paris Brain Institute has recently launched an ambitious center for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data science, currently gathering about 100 people with the objective to scale up to 150. The aim of the Center is to make the Paris Brain Institute an international hub in AI and data science for neuroscience, resulting in disruptive methodological advances and in major breakthroughs in understanding, preventing and treating brain disorders. The AI Center is housed in a modern building, a 5-minute walk from the main building.
The Paris Brain Institute invites expressions of interest from internationally recognized senior and mid-career researchers in the fields of AI, data science and computational sciences to address key challenges in brain health and neuroscience.
Purpose of this call
The objective of this expression of interest is to identify outstanding researchers whose expertise, scientific vision, leadership and management skills could contribute to strengthening and expanding the Institute’s capacities in AI, data science and computational sciences. This initiative is part of a strategic effort to anticipate future recruitment opportunities, develop new research directions, and expand our leadership in these areas. This call does not correspond to an open or funded position at this stage. The Institute is currently exploring the launch of a formal recruitment call in Fall 2026, with potential appointments starting in Fall 2027. The present expression of interest aims to help shape this prospective recruitment effort.
Scientific scope
We welcome expressions of interest from researchers working in areas including, but not limited to:
- AI and data science for omics data
- AI for drug discovery and repositioning
- Computational modelling and AI for cognitive science
- Computational modelling and AI for neurophysiology
- Computational and data-driven neuroscience
- Data science approaches for epidemiology
- Integration of multimodal data
- “NeuroAI” research at the interface of AI and neuroscience
- Validation and benchmarking of AI systems
We are typically looking for applicants who demonstrate:
- An outstanding scientific track record
- Experience leading independent research programs and teams
- International visibility
- Ability to attract competitive funding and develop international collaborations
- Interest in contributing to interdisciplinary research
- Capacity to mentor young researchers and structure emerging research initiatives
- Leadership and management experience, including the ability to coordinate large collaborative programs, foster interactions across scientific, technological, and clinical domains, and contribute to the development of institutional research initiatives
There is no strict constraint on seniority. We consider that “mid-career” typically starts around 10 years of “Academic age” but other seniority levels are equally welcome.
“Academic age” is the number of years after the date of the PhD defense, from which can be deducted durations related to matters such as maternity, paternity, or parental leave, illness, national service, clinical activities etc. Please refer to the submission website for specific details. To ensure a fair assessment of applications, achievements will be assessed in light of the “academic age” of the applicant.
Potential opportunities
The Institute is actively exploring recruitment pathways through national research organizations, including potential permanent “Director of Research” positions at CNRS, subject to institutional approval and competitive recruitment procedures. The Institute typically seeks to assemble such national research organization appointment with a competitive salary complement, and an attractive start-up package to enable the development of a new research team.
Living and working environment
France offers a highly supportive research and social environment that provides long-term stability for researchers and their families. Specifically, France has a world-class healthcare and social security system, including comprehensive coverage for family members, pediatric care and generous parental leave policies, support for a healthy work-life balance. The Paris Brain Institute and its partner institutions offer dedicated support for international recruitment, including assistance with relocation, administrative procedures, and integration into the local research and clinical ecosystem.
We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment. We encourage applications from women and underrepresented minorities. As a member of the Alba Network, the Paris Brain Institute champions equity and diversity in all its research and support activities. We provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive workplace, backed by our gender equity committee.
About the Paris Brain Institute ecosystem
The Paris Brain Institute is supported by a private not-for-profit foundation working in synergy with French public bodies, and affiliated with Sorbonne Université, CNRS and Inserm. It also has two joint research teams with Inria, the National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. The Institute is associated with clinical neuroscience departments (neurology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, etc.) of the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital (AP-HP), as well as with a large network of public and industrial partners. The Institute is dedicated to fundamental, translational and clinical research in neuroscience, and fosters improved quality of care and education. Moreover, a clinical investigation center and a start-up incubator are hosted in-house. The Institute is located alongside 13 National Reference Centers for rare neurological diseases at the Pitié-Salpêtrière. PBI is part of an international network of partnerships promoting research, mobility and knowledge exchange around the world.
