Call for one Unfixed-Term Contract as Technician at IPO Porto
CI 010/2026 (FCT UID/00776/2025)
The Board of Directors of the Instituto Português de Oncologia do Porto Francisco Gentil, EPE (IPO Porto) opens a call for hiring 1 technician for research activity with a Master’s degree, under unfixed-term contract for a period of 37 months or until the end of the project, within the scope of Pluriannual Funding of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) for the IPO Porto Research Center (R&D Unit 00776) with reference CI 010/2026 (FCT UID/00776/2025), to work at the Biobank of the Department of Pathology and IPO PORTO Research Center, hosted at IPO Porto.
1. Profile of the candidate
Any national, foreign, and stateless candidate(s) that hold the following requirements can apply:
Mandatory
- Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry/Biology or related fields;
- Documented experience in Oncology Research;
- At least one (1) publication as first author in an indexed peer-reviewed journal;
- Prior experience in multidisciplinary teams with clinical involvement;
- Previous experience in the processing, handling, storage, organization, and maintenance of human biological samples, including solid tissue, whole blood and urine, in a Biobank;
- Experience in the collection, management, and curation of clinical data from patients' medical records, as well as database construction and management;
- Experience using RedCap;
- Experience in inventory and stock management of laboratory consumables and reagents;
- Knowledge of laboratory quality management systems and proficiency in the implementation and standardization of laboratory protocols;
- Hands-on experience in manual and automated nucleic acid extraction from different biological specimens (e.g., tissue, plasma, pellets), and nucleic acid quantification (using Qubit, or similar) and quality assessment;
- Hands-on experience with high-throughput molecular laboratory platforms and molecular biology techniques, including RT-PCR/qPCR and plate-based analytical systems;
- Experience in molecular characterization of biological samples, including DNA, RNA, small RNA and protein analysis;
- Fluency in English and Portuguese (written and spoken).
Preferential
- Master’s degree in Oncology/Molecular Biology or related fields;
- Bachelor’s final classification of at least 16/20;
- Capability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines;
- Documented communication proficiency in national and international contexts;
- Focus on meeting goals and achieving objectives.
Note: In the event the degree was awarded by a foreigner higher education institution, the degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law nr 66/2018, of 18th August, and all formalities established there must be fulfilled by applications deadline.
2. Work plan
The work plan for this call is as follows:
- Reception and processing of human biological specimens, including solid tissues, whole blood and derivatives, urine, saliva, pleural effusions, and other biological materials;
- Perform accessioning, registration, identification, labelling, clinical cataloguing, preservation, and long-term storage of human biological specimens, ensuring complete sample traceability and integrity throughout the biobanking workflow;
- Perform inspection, aliquoting, packaging, shipment preparation, and coordination of national and international transportation of biological materials, ensuring compliance with biosafety requirements, applicable regulations, and material transfer procedures;
- Develop, maintain, and continuously update biobank databases and associated documentation, including the collection, curation, and management of clinical and laboratory data extracted from patients' medical records, while ensuring data quality, confidentiality, integrity, privacy protection, and compliance with applicable ethical, legal, and data protection regulations;
- Manage the inventory of laboratory consumables, reagents, cryogenic supplies, and other materials required for routine biobank activities;
- Contribute to the development, implementation, validation, and continuous improvement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical protocols supporting external quality certification and accreditation systems;
- Collaborate with institutional, national, and international partners in the planning, development, and execution of translational research projects involving human biological materials;
- Perform molecular biology laboratory procedures, including manual and automated nucleic acid extraction from different biological specimens, DNA/RNA quantification and quality assessment, PCR assays, and other molecular techniques required to support translational research activities.

5. Start Date and workplace
The contract is expected to start on 1st December 2026, and it is expected to end on the 31st of December 2029. The activities will be developed mainly at IPO Porto.
6. Monthly remuneration
The monthly gross remuneration is €1,499.15.
7. Application process

Note: The non-compliance with these requirements will determine immediate rejection of the application. 8. Evaluation criteria
The admitted applications will be evaluated considering the candidates' academic or professional qualifications, professional career, relevance of the experience and training and the type of duties carried out in accordance with the profile described above.
The jury will analyze the application documents according to following criteria: A. Curricular Evaluation (60%) and B. Motivation Letter (40%), carried out in accordance with the criteria set out in the document under Annex III.
After evaluation of all admitted applications, the jury will write a meeting minute with all process of recruitment, evaluation, and selection, including an ordered list of approved candidates and the final decision of the jury. The final decision of the jury shall be validated by the Head of the Institution, who is also in charge of deciding about the hiring.
9. Form of advertising / notification of results
The recruitment results will be announced by email to the email address indicated by the candidates in their Curricula Vitae/Motivation Letter and will be published at https://ipoporto.pt/nos-ipo/emprego-e-carreira/.
10. Preliminary hearing and final decision deadline
Pursuant to article 121 of the Administrative Procedure Code, after notified, all candidates have 10 working days to respond. Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a period of 90 days, from application deadline.
