Description
Position Summary
Keeps campus grounds and buildings in well-groomed condition and good repair. Performs all functions and activities within the guidelines and philosophy set forth in the BMCC Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan. Performs consistently with the team-based model and actively participates as a member of assigned college teams and committees. Conforms to the colleges guiding principles.
Essential Functions
- Mows, weeds, prunes, plants, waters, fertilizes as needed.
- Performs repairs and maintenance on sprinkler, lawn and garden equipment.
- Plows snow, clears and deices walkways.
- Applies pesticides in a safe and legal manner.
- Responsible for leading part time, temporary staff employed to provide routine mowing and maintenance. Includes determining work schedules, training, checking work and other related aspects of employment.
- Performs general maintenance and repairs on buildings and grounds as directed by the supervisor.
- Makes budgetary recommendations related to repair, use and maintenance of grounds keeping equipment and supplies.
- Maintains sensitivity, understanding, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, ability, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Other duties as assigned.
Other Aspects of this Position
- Must be able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions.
- Must be able to work flexible, varying hours, as necessary to get the job done.
- Valid drivers license required.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities:
- Must have thorough knowledge of pesticides and herbicides.
- Ability to effectively operate, maintain and repair sprinkler systems, mowing, pesticide, herbicide and related grounds keeping equipment and tools.
- Knowledge of routine maintenance of buildings and ability to effectively operate related equipment and tools.
- Must be able to sit, stand, reach, bend, twist, climb, crouch, crawl, kneel push, pull, shovel, walk, prune, plant, for varying lengths of time.
- Must possess a strong oral communication skills and the ability to convey information and direction to others.
- Must be self-directed, trustworthy, responsible and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to accurately estimate personnel and budgetary needs related to grounds maintenance.
- Thorough knowledge of plants and plant health and maintenance needs.
- Safety oriented, especially related to applications of pesticides and herbicides.
- Effective interpersonal and customer service skills needed.
Required Education and Experience
A high school education with 2-4 years of experience working as a full-service groundskeeper, or equivalent.
Must hold a current license to apply pesticides and herbicides, or the ability to obtain a license within the first six months of employment.
Forklift certification required (may obtain after hire).
Must be able to lift and move up to 100 lbs.
Preferred Education and Experience
Carpentry, electrical, plumbing skills desired, not required.
This is a full-time position with excellent benefits including: Medical, dental, vision, life, accidental death & dismemberment, and long-term disability insurance; Paid holidays; Sick Leave; Vacation; and Tuition waiver for employee and qualified dependents.
Pay: $23.43 - $24.33 per hour DOE; After 6-month probation $24.92 - $25.89 per hour DOE.
