Duties & Responsibilities

Position Summary

Technology Services is seeking a Campus Innovation Project Manager to join our team. This role serves as a key subject matter expert and advisor within the Office of the CIO, supporting campus innovation and the promotion of future tech at VCU. This senior-level individual contributor is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and advocating for emerging technologies that align with VCU's institutional goals. The role builds and maintains strong relationships with academic units, translating their complex needs and strategic goals into applied technology solutions. This position focuses on providing expert guidance and analysis to enhance the university's teaching, learning, research, and administrative functions.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Act as a trusted consultant to academic units, providing advice on how to leverage new and emerging technologies, translate complex needs into technology requirements, and guide stakeholders toward effective solutions.
  • Serve as a key advisor and project manager for innovative campus-wide IT initiatives, assisting in defining project scope, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, and providing oversight to guarantee successful implementation.
  • Lead pilot projects to test the viability and impact of new technologies, working directly with stakeholders to prototype solutions, gather feedback, and evaluate potentials for a broader rollout.
  • Proactively research, analyze and evaluate emerging technologies with a focus on their potential impact on learning, learning objectives and student needs.
  • Collaborate with educators, instructional stakeholders, administrators and IT to develop strategies for integrating emerging technologies into learning environments.
  • Provide backup support to the IT Governance program, and provide leadership and assistance with the coordination of major projects and strategic initiatives spearheaded by the Office of the CIO.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree in related fields and 5+ years experience leading or managing the delivery of IT projects or services in higher education OR any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies relevant to higher education, with the ability to strategically connect technology solutions to stakeholder needs.
  • Experience in leading or managing complex technology projects and initiatives, from ideation to implementation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex business needs into technology requirements.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills to influence diverse stakeholders.
  • Be able to advocate for change by actively promoting its benefits, addressing resistance, and fostering a culture of innovation and adaptability within the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Self-starter capable of working independently and comfortable working and communicating with a diverse group of domain knowledge experts, faculty, administrators, and executives.
  • Ability to remain flexible as priorities change, remain adaptable to change, and be able to accept and thrive in ambiguity.
  • Experience with project management fundamentals and stakeholder management.
  • Knowledge of best practice frameworks as related to business process improvement, risk assessment and adult learning.
  • Established skills in time management, multi-tasking, and prioritization of work.
  • Ability to build influence and trust with senior team members, academic and administrative stakeholders, etc.
