Location: Wooster, OH
Summary:
The Dispatcher serves as the central communication link for all safety and security operations. This role is responsible for receiving and coordinating calls for service, monitoring security systems, dispatching officers, and performing various administrative tasks. While the position is primarily communication and operations-based, dispatchers may also be assigned to conduct site security, officer patrols or parking enforcement duties as needed.
Essential Departmental Duties and Responsibilities:
- Handle emergency and non-emergency communications via phone, radio, electronic systems, and in-person interactions with professionalism and efficiency.
- Dispatch officers to incidents, service calls, and patrols based on priority, while monitoring radio systems, cameras, and alarm panels.
- Maintain detailed logs, officer activity, and departmental operations, including data entry and report filing.
- Serve as a communication liaison during emergencies, ensuring accurate and timely information flow between departments and personnel.
- Perform clerical and administrative duties, such as updating records, managing lockdown schedules, and supporting Command Staff with projects.
- Process campus services including ID cards, lost and found claims, parking permits, and citation appeals.
- Provide assistance and information to campus community members both in person and remotely, promoting customer service and community policing.
- Monitor and manage departmental communications, including email and other platforms, and transmit relevant information to college departments.
- Support campus operations, including locking/unlocking facilities, working flexible hours, and occasionally performing safety officer duties.
Job Requirements:
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; some college campus experience and at least two years related office/customer service experience preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience considered
- Previous experience in dispatch, customer service, safety, or office administrative work preferred
- Valid Ohio driver's license and clean driving record
- Ability to pass a background check and training requirements (e.g., CPR, First Aid, report writing, de-escalation)
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a clear, confident, and professional tone.
- Calm and sound decision-making under pressure, especially in emergency or high-stress situations.
- Proficient in basic computer operations and safety reporting software.
- Demonstrated integrity, reliability, and professionalism in all responsibilities.
- Strong multitasking and organizational abilities, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective interpersonal skills, able to interact respectfully with diverse individuals and groups.
- Thorough understanding and application of policies, procedures, and guidelines with minimal supervision.
- Skilled in preparing accurate reports and professional correspondence.
- Capable of interpreting and following instructions in various formats (written, verbal, scheduled).
- Dependable, adaptable, and committed to confidentiality, teamwork, and customer service excellence.
Work Environment:
- Primarily office-based, with occasional outdoor or mobile duties as needed
- May require sitting for extended periods and working with multiple screens/devices
- May involve exposure to emotionally intense situations
- Must be available to work various shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overnight hours
Physical Demands:
- Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
- Occasionally required to run, climb, stoop, balance and kneel, crouch and crawl
