Campus Safety Officer (Sworn Police Officer)
Job Description
This position's qualifications are reflective of those for a Sworn Police Officer including; Completion of a Full-Time Police Academy (Special State/SSPO, Bridge or Municipal).
Essential Functions
- Attend and participate in community engagement events such as Central Check-In, Stuff A Cruiser, Meals with Campo and other events.
- Enforcement of the rules and regulations of the College, federal, state and municipal laws and ordinances. Officers investigate complaints and other situations, which fall within the jurisdiction of the Smith College Police Department. Interview complainants, witnesses, suspects and victims. Follow-up investigative leads, evidence, etc. Apprehend and arrest violators, seek out warrants for arrest, assist with the prosecution, prepare reports, compile evidence, appear and testify in court.
- Patrol College grounds and properties via cruiser, bicycle, or foot while deterring criminal activity, and providing assistance to community members when necessary.
- Responds to medical emergencies, disturbances, suspicious activity, and all other calls for service according to established policies and procedures while investigating the incident and completing all necessary paperwork. Must be CPR and First Responder certified.
- Respond to and investigate fire alarms, panic alarms and all other alarms, contacting the appropriate personnel such as fire department, police department, and ambulatory services as necessary or when the supervisor requests.
- Enforce and report violations of all Department & College rules, regulations, guidelines, policies, and procedures through the chain of command by reports, memos and verbal communication.
- Receive, investigate, follow-up, document and respond to complaints from the Smith College community, including all types of crimes.
- Responsible for ensuring that arrest and protective custodies are proper under the applicable laws; that prisoners are given those rights afforded under State and Federal Laws; that prisoner injuries are documented in writing and first aid is rendered; transport to the lockup, hospital or court is accomplished in a safe manner; that booking paperwork is completed including as assessment of suicide risk and that a suicide monitor is in place while the person is under our control. Responsible for ensuring constant suicide monitoring of prisoners, meals are provided at regular intervals and that bail is offered according to accepted court practice.
- Prepare criminal incident report and log on assigned shifts.
- Establish and maintain POST certification while attending all mandatory meetings and trainings according to department mandates and POST/MPTC standards. Maintains a valid Massachusetts driver's license and License to Carry (LTC). Advise the Deputy Chief of any status changes as they occur.
- Provide prompt response to health and safety hazards on Smith College properties. Perform visual inspections and identify safety, lighting and other hazards. Take corrective action when necessary.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)
These are prerequisites to be hired into this position, and must be maintained as criteria for remaining in this position:
- Completion of a Full-Time Police Academy (Special State/SSPO, Bridge or Municipal).
- Must be able to be or already POST certified
- The rate of pay will be different from a Campus Police Officer until completion of a full-time academy. After which the candidate will assume his/her role as Police Officer with seniority and a raise to the current wage.
- Must have a valid driver's license. Must complete and comply with all college driving credentialing requirements.
- Must hold or be able to obtain shortly after hire CPR and First Responder Certification.
- Must be able to hold a License to Carry firearms (LTC).
- Must be able to pass a criminal and work background check, Division of M/V background and a medical pre-screening.
