DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Incumbents in this class perform elevated security-related functions at the Community College or school districts, responsible for overseeing security of campus and or school property, and for ensuring the safety of students, visitors, and staff. The work is performed under general supervision from the Director of Security, with considerable latitude allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

• Oversees patrols and patrols the grounds on foot or in a patrol car to maintain order, protect persons and property, control traffic, provide first aid, and to prevent trespassing, theft or damage.
• Investigates more complex complaints made to the incumbent personally or assigned by supervisor.
• Oversees inspection tours to ensure that security, safety and fire precautions are being observed, makes recommendations to supervisor based on findings;
• Conducts investigations into allegations of student misconduct, and participates in student conduct hearings.
• Adheres to all State and Federal guidance for investigating TITLE IX reports.
• Participates in medical, fire, police and general safety training programs.
• Files reports and maintains an appropriate system of records and reports.
• Assists with investigations into allegations of employee misconduct.
• May assist in training new officers.
• Does related work as required.

Good knowledge of the practices and procedures required to insure maintenance of order and security of buildings, grounds and equipment; thorough knowledge of safety precautions necessary to eliminate existing and potential security, safety and fire hazards; good knowledge of law enforcement statutes pertaining to theft and trespassing; good knowledge of investigative techniques; ability to communicate effectively with others; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to prepare clear, concise reports; good judgment; tact; courtesy; resourcefulness; dependability.

Job Requirements: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of an appropriate equivalency diploma recognized by the NYS Dept. of Education AND EITHER:

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered College or University with an Associate's degree or higher AND one (1) year of full-time paid experience in a campus security organization, corrections, private, public, commercial security force or related field or in a customer service field;

OR

Two (2) years of full-time paid experience in a campus security organization, corrections, private, public, commercial security force or related field or in a customer service field.

NOTE: Part-time, paid experience may be prorated to meet the requirements above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: ANY GOVERNMENT AGENCY EMPLOYING INDIVIDUALS (EXCEPT PEACE AND POLICE OFFICERS) TO PERFORM SECURITY SERVICES WILL BE REGULATED BY THE N.Y.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 1994.

Security guards employed prior to January 1, 1994 may continue employment pending compliance with registration requirements. A date for compliance with the new registration requirement for such employees will be assigned by the Department of State. New security guard employees on and after January 1, 1994 must meet the following new registration requirements in addition to the minimum qualifications listed above:

• At least 18 years of age
• Complete a minimum of 8 hours of pre-assignment training
• Not have been convicted of a serious offense
• Be of good moral character and fitness
• Not have been discharged from a correctional/law enforcement agency for incompetence or misconduct.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a Part Time, Genesee County civil service position at 19.5 hours per week and is compensated at a rate of $21.54 per hour. May be assigned to work any shift in a 24 hour setting. Must be able to work all shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime. Must have a valid driver's license and have obtained a current and valid NYS Security Guard License by start of appointment. Please note, this position is designated as an essential worker at Genesee Community College.

Position will be a provisional appointment and selected incumbent must be a resident of Genesee, Erie, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans or Wyoming County, apply for the next Genesee County Civil Service examination for this title and be reachable on the list.
