Canada Impact+ Research Chairs (Nomination)

Date Posted: March 19, 2026Deadline to Apply: April 17 @ 11:59pm EST, 2026

York University invites expressions of interest from exceptional, internationally based researchers for nomination as Canada Impact+ Research Chairs under the Impact+ Research Chairs (Impact+) Program. This initiative emphasizes both research excellence and impact, and is designed to attract world-leading talent whose research addresses critical global and national challenges and delivers measurable economic, societal and health benefits for Canada and the world.

About the Program
The Canada Impact+ Research Chairs program supports institutions in recruiting and retaining researchers of the highest international caliber whose work will:

  • Advance bold, transformative research with clear pathways to impact and application;
  • Build and sustain exceptional research teams;
  • Collaborate across academic, government, industry and community sectors;
  • Translate discoveries into tangible innovations, policy, commercialization, and societal benefits; and
  • Train and mentor the next generation of highly qualified personnel.

Successful nominees will be awarded either $8 million ($1 million/year) or $4 million ($500 K/year) over eight years, with potential for a four-year extension at 50% of the initial value, based on demonstrated research impact and sustained partnerships. The two values of the award recognize the varying costs of research across disciplines. Successful awardees may also apply for up to $6 million for infrastructure support through the Canada Impact + Research Infrastructure Fund.

Chairholders are expected to advance one or more of the Government of Canada’s strategic priority areas:

  • Advanced digital technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence, quantum and cybersecurity);
  • Health, including biotechnology;
  • Clean technology and resource value chains;
  • Environment, climate resilience and the Arctic;
  • Food and water security;
  • Democratic and community resilience;
  • Manufacturing and advanced materials; and
  • Defence and dual-use technologies.

Full program details can be found on the program’s website: https://www.canada.ca/en/impact-plus-chairs/program-details/competition/2026/apply.html
