CAPS Counselor (Hybrid)

Join a vibrant and supportive team of clinicians working to support and promote mental health and wellness across the UM-Flint student body! You will work with a team that values the health and well-being of all staff members within the department and actively engages in efforts to promote self-care and life-work balance. As a counselor within the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) office, you will provide individual, couples, and group counseling, consultation for faculty and staff related to student mental health, outreach and educational activities on various mental health and wellness topics, and mental health crisis intervention services. Your clinical focus will be as a generalist in the areas of short-term clinical work, group treatment, outreach, and community engagement work related to areas such as depression, anxiety, PTSD/trauma, LGBTQ+ issues, and multicultural/diversity issues. You will report to the Assistant Director of CAPS.

Engagement in continuing education and professional development activities is supported and expected of counselors within CAPS. Supervision can be offered as able to support the pursuit of full clinical licensure. We are committed to building a culturally humble staff who can serve the needs of our diverse student body.

  • Provide short-term therapeutic counseling services and outreach to the campus community, including screening and diagnostic assessment and individual, couples, and group counseling for diverse students while working with multiple presenting concerns
  • Provide crisis intervention to campus groups and the campus at-large both during and after business hours. After hours on call responsibilities are required but limited and involve responding to student mental health emergencies after hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis.
  • Complete suicide assessments for our students in distress
  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate outreach activities for students, faculty, and staff focused on a variety of mental health topics
  • Maintain confidential client files and appropriate record-keeping, according professional, ethical, and legal standards
  • Design and implement psycho-educational programming on a broad range of issues
  • Be a resource to colleagues by brining a clinical perspective to University concerns
  • Work collaboratively with diverse teams across our campus to support student mental health programming and services
  • Attend our staff and professional development opportunities
  • Masters degree in counseling, clinical psychology, or clinical social work.
  • Full licensure or ability to obtain full licensure for independent practice in the State of Michigan, including LP, LMSW, or LPC (limited licenses acceptable)
  • 2+ years of clinical experience in a related role working with young adult populations (1 year of clinical experience if previous clinical work was done in a college counseling center)
  • Experience with working with students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds

Hybrid:

A consistent hybrid work schedule (some days on campus and some days working remotely) is available for this position at this time. However, this is subject to change based upon the duties of the position and the needs of the department. CAPS will provide a laptop computer to enable counselors to work in a hybrid fashion.
