Job Description

Summary:

Primary responsibilities of this position will be to support all students toward appropriate self-care, self-management, and self-advocacy. The Care Coordinator works with students experiencing varying levels of crisis and concerns that include, but are not limited to, academic, personal, financial, mental and physical health, and family issues. This position is highly collaborative and plays an active role in non-clinical student case management, developing and implementing both long- and short-term response plans. This position is part of the Office of the Dean of Students within the Division of Student Affairs.

Essential Functions:

Student Services

  • Serve as primary resource for managing student issues related to crisis intervention and coordination with other university departments.
  • Manage referrals of distressed students from administration, faculty, staff, and other members of the university community; provide feedback to referral agents.
  • Following referral receipt, gather additional information from a variety of sources regarding student of concern.
  • Outreach to students to schedule initial meetings with appropriate team members.
  • Maintain an active caseload, regularly assessing and responding to changes in student risk levels to ensure appropriate support throughout the duration of each case.
  • Coordinate and connect students with health services, academic support, and other campus and community resources to promote overall wellbeing.
  • Provide support in accessing and securing basic needs resources, including food, housing, medical, transportation, and emergency financial assistance.
  • Provide short-term/triage case management and crisis intervention.
  • Respond to alerts generated by student interactions with campus chatbot; document response.

Conflict Resolution

  • Help students improve communication skills and clarify expectations in a safe, non-threatening environment, so there will be increased acceptance of outcomes.
  • Listen to student concerns regarding campus life in and out of the classroom, to include roommate disputes, conflict with faculty members, confusion over advising, and appeals.

Operations

  • Participate in creating a professional setting that values understanding, mutual respect, and the development of interpersonal skills to effectively engage with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Improve operations and implement systems which will better track services and referrals to aid MU students.
  • Maintain files, records, and databases that are protected for student privacy.
  • Assist with caseload audits and data review by generating reports from database analytics, as requested by supervisory staff.

Outreach/Educational Programming

  • Participate in campus outreach and educational initiatives designed to enhance student awareness of available resources. These efforts also aim to inform faculty, staff and campus partners of resources available to students.
  • Contribute to the development of engaging educational materials.
  • Enhance and strengthen working relationships throughout the campus community.

Shift

Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. This position may require evening and weekend hours supporting activities and programs within the department. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of your normal schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Two to four years of progressively responsible full-time experience in student affairs practice in higher education or related field.
  • The successful candidate should have some combination of knowledge and skills in the following areas: Emergency response/crisis intervention, Experience in counseling/social work, Commitment to students’ rights to privacy, Knowledge of college student development theory, risk factors, and current trends in student support services, Conflict resolution, Understanding legal issues related to student affairs and Student Code of Conduct, Effective collaboration with a variety of individuals, Working effectively under pressure, Working as a member of a team and independently, Strong work ethic, Excellent verbal and written communication, Well-developed interpersonal relations, Knowledge of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (or FERPA), Ability to speak in front of audiences of varying compositions and sizes.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Range: $18.87 - $26.75 Grade: GGS-008 University Title: Student Service Coordinator I
