Career Advisor - Career and Professional Development
Job Description
The purpose of the role is to assist with the education of all students on what they need to plan and succeed in their chosen career after graduation. This person will create education materials and deliver them in one-on-one appointments, workshops, and events. They will also develop and maintain content for the career website that delivers career education materials 24/7. They will collaborate with all stakeholders to support integration of career education materials in all areas of campus life, especially the classroom.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Career Advising
- Provide advice and guidance in career planning and development to undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni in individual appointments.
- Career Champions program support
- Support the Career Champions program by creating resources for faculty to include in their curriculum.
- Data coordination
- Coordinate the collection of engagement data for the department. Collect engagement data for the Career Education Team.
- Develop and deliver workshops
- Develop and conduct workshops on various career-related topics.
- Content Creation
- Develop content for the website, including blog posts, how-to guides, and educational videos.
- Collaborate with other departments to reach more students with career education materials.
- Event support
- Develop and support events to promote the services of our office to current and potential students.
- Other reasonable duties as assigned
Functional and Supervisory Relationships:
- Reports to Assistant Director Career Education
- Supervises the following positions: None to start
- May supervise student employees as assigned (if no direct reports at time of filling position)
Job Requirements:
- Superior interpersonal skills: Ability to advise students and manage emotions such as frustration and anxiety.
- Broad knowledge of career topics, including resumes, cover letters, interviewing, job searching, graduate school applications, networking, and professional etiquette. Knowledge of career development models and theories. Ability to continuously work to keep information current. Broad knowledge of university majors and graduate programs. Current knowledge of employer hiring practices.
- Relationship-building skills and ability to collaborate with different types of people
- Presentation skills. Must be able to develop and deliver engaging presentations on a wide variety of career topics.
- Knowledge of Microsoft office suite, Handshake, UConnect, and other career development software tools.
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands, and be able to change approach or method to best fit the situation.
- Time management and project management.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
- A minimum of 1 year of full-time experience working with students in a higher education setting.
- Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community
- Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 to 3 years of experience working in a career center advising students in career topics.
- Master's degree in counseling, higher education, social welfare or related field.
- Advanced experience with Microsoft Excel or similar product.
- Experience with assessment in higher education.
- Experience with Handshake and EAB.
- Knowledge of college student development and experience advising undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni.
- Experience using social media to highlight career resources and building online engagement with the student community.
Working Environment:
- Typical office environment
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends for presentations and other events.
Additional Information:
Professional Rank and Salary Range: Career Planning and Development Associate, SL-2, $52,000-$54,000
