Career Connections Coordinator
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Career Connections, this position develops and implements career services activities within the university. Assists with overall career development planning and operational activities of the office. Implement career-readiness awareness for students to articulate skills developed in the classroom and through degree-related experiences. Advises students on various aspects of entering the world of work, including resume writing and interviewing skills as well as career exploration. This position will assist with NSLS, LAD Scholars, Career Fairs, and assessment/evaluations associated with Career Connections. Using an equity lens, the coordinator will improve student retention and better prepare students to meet their professional and academic goals through programming and services. Manage the 12twenty platform for the First Destination Survey and report the data to NACE, Experiential Learning module, job postings, and students.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Minimum of one year experience in one or more of the following areas: Career Services, Advising, Residence Life, Enrollment Management or other student related area in higher education.
Preferred Requirements
- Master's degree.
- Knowledge of 12twenty (career-specific online management).
- Knowledge of NACE Career Competencies.
Essential Functions
Duties
(50%) Career Advising: Provides targeted career guidance informed by current best practices to a variety of communities on campus, including non-traditional students, international students, students of color, neurodiverse students, veterans, and others. Introduces students to the current and relevant career information using tools available through SOU's Career Connections site. Promotes student engagement in classroom, co-curricular experiences, and community-based learning activities that contribute to career planning and preparation. Provides guidance about internships and collaborates with internship coordination staff. Manage the 12twenty platform along with the Experiential Learning module. Builds and delivers classroom presentations and workshops.
(30%) Leadership Programming: Assist the Director with NSLS, LAD Scholars, Career Fair, and assessment/evaluations associated with Career Connections.
(10%) Assessment: Assist the Director with the annual program review of Career Connections, Career Outcomes Survey, and additional reports/assessment needed associated with internships and other relevant areas.
(10%) Duties Include: Other duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Excellent communication skills; demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and consistently apply a wide variety of complex policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not always exist.
- Expressed ability to work with frequent changes in policies and procedures, under pressure of deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong analytical and research skills; demonstrated ability to gather, evaluate, and to develop well-reasoned conclusions and recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to proactively assess work operations and anticipate potential problems; ability to develop and implement strategies for preventing/resolving problems.

- Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of productivity and accuracy/attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the demonstrated ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
- Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, social media platforms, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
- Demonstrated ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
- Willingness to and work effectively in a heavily bureaucratic environment which requires regular interaction with a number of levels within the organization and multiple outside agencies.
- Working knowledge or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies, and procedures.
- Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
- Assists students by serving as a liaison for specific academic departments concerning credit issues and program information, by providing career information about full-time and internship opportunities, and by assisting in all aspects of a professional credential preparation, including resume writing and interviewing skills improvement.
- Ensures the learning experience for students is effective by working closely with faculty advisers. Facilitates employer recruitment of students by identifying, locating, and referring eligible students for job placement.
- Promotes career services by making presentations to classes and student organizations and by assisting in coordinating special events, programs, receptions, etc.
- Coordinates major projects to help students with professional development, and assist with career fairs, teacher placement days, on-campus interviews, etc.
- Promotes the university and career services through participation in professional organizations, for example Co-op Education and Internship Association (CEIA), NACE, MPACE.
- Contributes to the overall success of career services by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Physical Demand
Normal office activities such as sitting/standing at a desk, using a computer, answering phones, and communicating in person both in writing and via phone with others. Travel between buildings on campus.
Special Conditions
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development. Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check. This position classification has been defined as exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The person holding this position is considered a mandatory reporter under the Oregon Revised Statutes and is required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Oregon Department. This position is grant funded and renewal of appointment is contingent upon continued funding. When a grant experiences a loss in funding, employees whose appointments are funded by that grant may be terminated without notice.
