Your opportunity:

The Office of Learner Affairs (OLA) is dedicated to working with and supporting learners from the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s undergraduate medical education (MD and MD/PhD), Postgraduate Medical Education, Medical Radiation Sciences, Physician Assistant, and Occupational Therapy Physical Therapy, Speech Language Pathology programs to optimize the learning environment and experience at individual and systems levels, and enable learners’ development into and as health care professionals.

As Career Counsellor, you will provide individual and group career counselling to learners who are diverse in age, culture, race, gender, sexual identity, and educational background. You will develop resources and establish networks with University of Toronto and external career development/counselling agencies in order to help ensure that our learners are well positioned and prepared for progression through the continuum of medical education and into medical practice.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Counselling and advising medical students on career development by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances and an understanding of an individual's background
  • Screening for referrals for academic advising and with other counselling services for students in distress
  • Developing and delivering learning outcomes and content for workshops and evaluating programs
  • Keeping well informed on labour market, occupational and educational work trends and theories related to equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counselling or equivalent education and experience, related to career development and advising
  • Minimum five years’ experience working with students in professional health-care-related post-secondary educational/training programs
  • Knowledge of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and its community partners, including application of its policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience in career counselling, development, or advising on an individual or group basis
  • Experience applying counselling techniques and self-assessment tools, supporting program development and developing and conducting outreach and workshops/seminars
  • Experience interpreting and applying policies and procedures and writing and editing communications
  • Experience building and sustaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including external career development/counselling agencies
  • Knowledge and application of AFMC Career Counselling standards
  • Research experience or demonstrated proficiency in evaluation/quality assurance
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Excellent (oral and written) communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated skill/aptitude in cross-cultural communication and inter-professional group facilitation
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a supportive environment
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and an ability to adapt to change quickly; ability to work independently, to set priorities and work schedules to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels of the University and Associated Organizations
  • Tact, discretion, sensitivity to confidential matters
  • Ability and willingness to travel between the St. George and Mississauga campuses
