Accountabilities

Duties and accountabilities include:
- Constructs, erects, installs and repairs wood and masonry structures and fixtures of wood working from blueprints, drawings, written or oral instructions.
- Proficient in installation of multiple wall hangings (Vinyl, acoustical, draperies, etc.).
- Proficient with the use of hand and power tools, such as hammer, trowels, screw guns, table, chop saws, etc., essential to perform all assigned duties.
- Remove, hang, patch sheet rock, make plaster repairs, perform trim work and make cabinetry and furniture repairs.
- Mix mortar, build, erect and repair stone, brick structures such as walls, sidewalks, curbstones and perform ceramic and quarry tile installations.
- Perform associated preparation work (i.e. form and frame work, trim setting, erect scaffolding.)
- Conducts own layout for assigned jobs which includes estimating labor hours, materials and support staff needed and maintains accurate record of labor and materials ordered.
- Perform minor roof work and repairs.
- Prepare, tape and finish unfinished sheetrock or similar materials.
- Maintain a spirit of cooperation, exercising self-discipline, diplomacy, and tact in dealing with all other university personnel.
- Perform repairs on door hardware and locking systems.
- Perform repairs on multiple different door and window systems. (IE. Hollow metal frames, Aluminum storefront, sliding, etc.)
- Work independently, without direct supervision, and coordinate work with others.
- Works under the direction of the carpenter foreperson.
- Work closely with campus customers to understand their needs, to coordinate and schedule work and close out jobs.
- Work closely with other Architectural Trades Journeypersons and help team members as needed.
- Oversee outside contractors work to ensure Colgate standards are met and must be able to oversee apprentices and/or summer and casual wage hires.
- Recording work order entries, material and labor, in a timely and accurate manner.
- Demonstrates ability to provide professional communications in all interactions, including face-to-face, phone, radio or written.
- Demonstrates ability to listen to customers and transfer to actual needs and appropriately provide solutions and information for all types of users.
- Demonstrates ability to diffuse the most challenging situations and remain calm and focused and escalate as required.
- Demonstrates use of all safety regulations (federal, state and local), as well as Colgate policies, practices and procedures to carry out duties in a safe manner related to carrying out duties.
- Demonstrates an ability to work as part of a unified team, with positive relationships with all members of the department.
- Demonstrates strong coordination and communication between multi-functional teams to get the job done and done well.
Professional Experience/Qualifications
- Experience with hanging and patching sheet rock, as well as plaster repairs.
- Experience in performing trim work, making cabinetry and furniture repairs, constructing framing, etc.
- Experience with installation and repair various commercial and residential door/window systems.
- Experience in varies types of suspension ceiling grids and tiles.
- Previous masonry and tiling experience.
- Experience interacting with team members and other campus constituents with a positive attitude.
- Experience working independently, as well as part of a team and coordinating with other trade shops.
- Must have basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Gmail, with the ability to use computer programs to complete work order entries, material procurement, estimating, and other shop related activities.
- Commercial and Residential construction work settings.
- Able to work nights, weekends and holidays, as may be required.
- Requires excellent customer service skills.
- Must be capable of working in a setting with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and visitors on a daily basis.
- Must be able and capable of learning new systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written).
- Completion of Trade school desired.
- 10-hour Osha training course
- Additional experience painting.
- Knowledgeable in NYS Building Codes.
Education
High School diploma (or equivalent) is required or a combination or education and experience from which comparable skills have been acquired is required.
At least one of the following is required:
- Certification from a 4 or 5 year accredited carpentry apprentice program and 2 years of carpentry journeyperson level field experience.
- Graduation from 2 year certified construction trade school plus 3 years of actively working in the carpentry field at journeyperson level.
- Proof of 5 consecutive years as a journeyperson carpenter in the field.

Physical Demands
- Outdoor work and occasional extreme temperatures as required.
- Responsible for following all procedures to conduct work activities in a safe manner including, but not limited to, wearing PPE required for specific duties and safe handling of chemicals and tools as outlined by University policies and / or the Facilities Management team.
- Responsible for immediately reporting any unsafe conditions to Management and / or Environmental Health and Safety.
- Required to wear a NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety) approved respirator and personal protective equipment.
- Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions as needed including exposure to heights, high speed power tools.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach and climb. Must be comfortable with exposure to heights (ladders, scaffolding, lifts).
