Carpenter
Job Summary
The Operations and Maintenance Department works to extend the life of University buildings, protect and maintain University assets, assist with construction projects and promote environmental sustainability. Under the supervision of the manager/supervisor in the Operations and Maintenance Department, this is an entry level carpenter position responsible for the construction, maintenance, repair and alteration of campus structures and equipment. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
Responsibilities
- Construction and Repair - 40: Performs construction installation, maintenance, repair and alteration of campus structures, equipment, furniture, cabinets and casework, doors, windows and door hardware and other building components and accessories including finish and unfinished components and accessories including finish and unfinished carpentry
- Maintenance - 30: Maintain work, shop areas and vehicles, stock supplies and manage waste generated from work tasks. Perform organization of power tools and construct Preventative Maintenance schedule for hand and power tools. Assist in categorizing, performing inventory and stocking building materials and parts.
- Operating Equipment - 10: Operates equipment for various grading and construction requirements including but not limited to manlift, forklift, scaffolding and ladders. Stage work site by surveying specific hazards and potential safety concerns prior to beginning work
- Inventory - 10: Maintains work and shop areas, stock supplies and manage waste generated from work tasks.
- Other - 10: Perform other duties as required to meet the goals of the Department, Division, and Georgia College & State University.
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent AND 3 years of related experience; OR Demonstrated work experience in carpentry or related work of 5 or more years
Other Required Qualifications
Ability to operate a computer or iPad in order to receive and send and submit work orders using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS); Valid driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
ABILITIES
- Ability to comprehend two-dimensional plans and visualize them in three-dimensional format.
- Ability to understand, follow and perform tasks within safety protocols.
- Ability to read, understand and follow written instructions. Ability to climb, work from ladders, scaffolding and staging, daily.
- Ability to grasp, lift, and carry heavy objects, daily.
- Ability to operate motor vehicle, motorized man lifts, heavy equipment and power tools, daily.
- Ability to remain on task without direct supervision for extended periods of time.
KNOWLEDGE
- Basic knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, equipment and materials used in a wide variety of building and mechanical trades. Knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with working with power tools and equipment. Knowledge of precautions for handling hazardous waste. Basic understanding of plumbing, electrical and HVAC work and processes.
SKILLS
- Demonstrate skill in maintaining tools, equipment and materials of the trade.
