The College of the Holy Cross is seeking a skilled and experienced Carpenter to join our Facilities team. This position is responsible for performing construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of campus buildings and structures. The carpenter plays an essential role in preserving and enhancing the condition of academic buildings, residence halls, administrative offices, and other campus facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carpentry Maintenance & Repair: Construct, install, repair, and maintain structural woodwork, doors, windows, cabinetry, flooring, drywall, ceilings, and other complex building components.
  • Finish Carpentry: Perform high-quality interior finish work including trim, molding, staircases, and cabinetry to maintain or upgrade aesthetic and functional standards of campus buildings.
  • Rough Carpentry: Frame partitions, install plywood sheathing, set door and window frames, and assist with general construction of structural supports and framework.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections of campus buildings for wear or damage. Perform necessary repairs to enhance safety, functionality, and longevity of structures.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with other trades, facilities staff, and outside vendors to coordinate multi-disciplinary repair and construction projects across the campus.
  • Safety & Code Compliance: Follow all applicable safety protocols and building codes. Ensure efficient use of materials and compliance with college, state, and local regulations.
  • Recordkeeping & Documentation: Utilize the college's work order system to track tasks, document repairs, and maintain accurate material and labor records.
  • Install and replace ceiling panels and grid work.
  • Install hung items such as different types of dispensers, pictures, etc.
  • Assemble purchased furniture or equipment.
  • Must always represent the Facilities department with excellent customer service skills and professional attitude.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid driver's license for at least the last 3 years.
  • 3+ years of carpentry experience in a commercial, residential, or institutional setting (college, hospital, or corporate campus experience preferred).
  • Construction Supervisors License
  • Strong knowledge of rough and finish carpentry methods, tools, and materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and technical documents.
  • Familiarity with construction safety practices and relevant building codes and regulations.
  • Proficient use of standard carpentry tools and power equipment (e.g., table saws, routers, planers, drills).
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and respond to urgent repair needs.

Working Environment:

  • Must be physically capable of lifting materials, standing or walking for long periods, climbing ladders, working at heights, and working in confined or awkward spaces.
  • Will work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions depending on project requirements.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency calls and participate in an on-call rotation as needed.
  • Continuous mental and visual attention required to ensure accuracy, safety, and high-quality workmanship.

Hours:

Monday to Friday 7:00AM to 3:30PM

Additional Information:

This position is classified as non-exempt level position for purposes of the federal wage and hour law. This position is a temporary 40 hours/week position and comes with benefits.
