Casual Academics - School of Psychology

Applications for Tutoring in Semester 2 2026 will close on 17th June 2026.

Casual Academic staff provide a rich and important contribution to the University’s academic, teaching, outreach and clinical endeavours through the provision of a range of academically focused services and activities. Casual Academic staff may be engaged to fulfil a wide range of duties, including (but not limited to) tutoring; marking; demonstrating; teaching; clinical education; student outreach and engagement; moderating/facilitating and/or student advising; across multiple academic disciplines. Casual Academic staff are remunerated according to the category of their duties, as detailed in UQ’s Enterprise Agreement and reiterated in this job profile.

To be eligible to casual academic in the School of Psychology you must have completed your Honours in Psychology.

School of Psychology Requirements

  • Each course is delivered differently. Please familiarise yourself with the course before preferencing.
  • We strongly recommend reaching out to the Course Coordinator to discuss course details before applying.
  • If you have skills that you believe are relevant to a particular course (e.g., quantitative/technical skills or in-depth content knowledge) please make note of this when applying.
  • All new casual academics are required to attend a casual academic orientation on Friday 10th June from 11am. New casual academics who do not attend will not be given an appointment.
  • Casual academics need to be available for at least half of the tutorials on offer for their preferred courses otherwise we may not be able to offer you a position.
  • To be undertake tutoring you MUST be available for the entire semester, from Week 1 through to Grade Release.
  • New casual academics are also expected to attend Faculty Tutor Training, this comprises a number of sessions which will take place in O Week. More information will be provided following the release of appointments.

Course Ranking and Allocation

We use a rating system to assist us in allocating casual academics to courses. When rating the courses that are on offer, please remember that the more courses you give a rating to (1 to 4 stars) the greater your chance of being allocated to a course.

  • 4 – I would love to teach this subject; 3 – I would be happy to teach this subject; 2 – I would not mind teaching this subject; 1 – I would rather not teach this subject; 0 – I would rather not tutor than teach this subject.
  • The minimum allocation load for most courses is 2 tutorials. Tutorials are either 1 or 2 hours long.
  • Casual academics will be paid as per the casual academic salary scale via a predetermined schedule. Payments will vary week to week depending on the course schedule.
