General Description

Salary: Starting rates based on position role and length of term ($3,650-$9,950 Lab Instructor) ($5,300-$15,200 Clinical Instructor) ($7,400 Synthesis Instructor). The Clinical Instructor is responsible for teaching primarily in the clinical and laboratory/simulation settings for students in the MSN (Entry into Practice) program. The Clinical/Laboratory Instructor reports to the Clinical Course Coordinator or Laboratory Course Coordinator when leading a clinical or laboratory group and ultimately reports to the Associate Director for Clinical Practice, MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program.

Position Term: The position term is a semester in duration and renewed based on the program's needs, satisfactory clinical evaluations, and the approval of the Clinical Coordinator of the MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program. (Fall term 8/26/2024 through 11/18/2024)

Responsibilities

  • Participate in all mandatory training and/or meetings required before the semester, including site-specific orientation
  • Teaching in the clinical/laboratory/simulation settings utilizing evidence-based practice and adult learning principles
  • Proactively creates an inclusive learning environment
  • Accountable for ensuring complete/assigned clinical hours
  • Maintain familiarity with theory content
  • Provide standardized learning experiences when applicable
  • Follows the direction of the Clinical Coordinator and Program Director of the MSN (Entry into Nursing) Program
  • Attends course planning meetings as directed by the Clinical Course Coordinator
  • Ensures that all students in the assigned clinical group have completed compliance requirements for the assigned clinical site by the identified due date
  • Prepares and submits incident reports related to student exposures according to site and SON policies
  • Takes students to the Occupational Health Clinic following exposures as directed by the Infectious Disease or Occupational Health official at the clinical site
  • Works collaboratively with nurse managers, staff nurses, and other representatives of the clinical units assigned
  • Meets with students as requested or when necessary to address student performance concerns
  • Works closely with students' clinical course coordinator when a student's performance in clinical/laboratory/course places the student at risk for failure
  • Provides students with a recommended plan for academic improvement as needed and follows up to determine if student performance improves
  • Provides timely feedback to students on their clinical/laboratory/course progress
  • Communicate in writing with the clinical coordinator if they are considering issuing a course warning and when/if it is issued
  • If appropriate, initiate notifications of missed clinical time and/or clinical/laboratory/course warnings
  • Communicate in writing with students and the clinical coordinator if the student is not passing at midterm or at the end of the course
  • Communicate concerns about non-academic student issues to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs
  • Reviews patient log and verifies time log in EXXAT
  • Able to travel to Johns Hopkins SON and clinical facilities in the Baltimore-Washington area

Qualifications

  • Current licensure as a registered nurse
  • Master's degree in nursing or DNP
  • Complete compliance requirements of SON and/or clinical site
  • Minimum of 2 years of providing direct patient care as an RN or advanced practice nurse
  • Excellent organizational, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively manage details and problem solve in a complex environment
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so at Johns Hopkins SON
  • Experience as a clinical educator is preferred
