Institute of International Private Law – part-time teaching assistant (55%) - Private International Law and Arbitration Law
The RU International and European Law conducts high quality research, and provides teaching, in: 1. International Law: The Institute for International Law and the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies conduct high-level research at the international level, and in a multidisciplinary context, in the fields of international law, the law of international organisations and the law of the European Union. Research areas range from international economic law (WTO) to international humanitarian, security and criminal law. 2. European Law: The Institute of European Law conducts research in the field of European Union law, with particular attention to constitutional and comparative law issues. Areas of research range from all aspects of institutional European law, including EU external relations law, through to substantive European law, including EU citizenship, the internal market and competition law. 3. International Private Law: The study of the increasing European harmonisation of international private law, its impact on international harmonisation, the relevance of IPR for adjacent fields such as private judicial law but also non-adjacent fields such as public interest litigation and the tensions between common law and civil law in the field of IPL.
Responsibilities
Teaching assistance in the field of international dispute resolution in particular 1. private international law, and 2. arbitration law. The successful candidates will assist Prof. Geert Van Calster in the tutorials private international law at Hasselt University; supervising seminar papers and master papers in the field of private international law; and assistance with the classes as well as marking of the exams for arbitration law. The portfolio of 55% will ideally be taken up by one candidate who with professor Van Calster will attempt to obtain full-time research funding e.g. via FWO. Depending on the Institute's assistance requirements and candidates' backgrounds, the 55% may be divided in slices of 5%.
Profile
- Master of Laws (LL.M.) with a keen interest (and if possible demonstrable expertise) in the field of international dispute resolution.
- Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate an interest in and knowledge of private international law and an interest in or knowledge of arbitration law.
- Excellent knowledge of English, ideally also knowledge of Dutch.
Offer
Teaching assistant for 1 year, renewable.
Candidates will be assisted in locating research funding for a full-time research position.
Salary according to scale 43.
