CDL Research Assistant
Virginia Tech is seeking a CDL Research Assistant for the Division of Freight, Transit, & Heavy Vehicle Safety (DHVY). This role involves driving trucks for the Sharing the Road with Trucks outreach program to educate drivers on safely sharing the road with commercial motor vehicles. Key responsibilities include:
- Sharing the Road Events (50%): Driving VTTI's tractor-trailers and leading hands-on demonstrations to create an engaging learning environment.
- Research Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver (40%): Assisting with research tasks, including data collection and interaction with participants.
- Program/Research Support (10%): Providing additional support as needed.
The position requires up to 25% travel across the U.S. and involves conducting research on truck and bus safety, data acquisition, and analysis. The ideal candidate must hold a valid Class A CDL, have at least one year of experience driving articulated commercial motor vehicles, possess strong communication and organizational skills, and meet requirements in 49 CFR 391.21.
Preferred qualifications include a degree in education, business administration, engineering, or psychology, experience with research protocols, and proficiency in research software.
