About the role
REACTORS 5.0 funded by the European Research Executive Agency and led by ERA Chair holder Dr Nuno M. Reis, from the University of Bath, UK, aims to boost Excellence and Innovation in green and digital technologies by pioneering sustainable reactor and microreactor technologies based on nature’s ‘first principles’.
REACTORS 5.0 will be centred on Excellence in design, modelling, and machine learning for advancing reactor and microreactor innovations tuned to unmet needs in clinical, environmental, and food sectors. The focus of the team will be on high-quality research and impactful innovations, including dissemination of outcomes and success in research income to enable collaborative, international developments with global impact.
You will be responsible for developing and implementing Machine Learning algorithms to support the design, experimental validation and application of novel sustainable reactor or microreactor designs, in partnership with other members of the team and a range of internal and external collaborators.
The purpose of this role is to:
- developing and implementing Machine Learning algorithms for reaction engineering, aligned with specific industrial needs and key outcomes/impacts identified in Horizon Europe's funding landscape
- support the design and experimental validation of novel sustainable reactor and microreactor/microfluidic designs
- developed machine learning interfaces with experimental state-of-the-art techniques and/or numerical Multiphysics simulation tools being developed within the team
- explore opportunities for using Machine Learning to boost design and integration of e.g. advanced materials, biological molecules, or cells in sustainable reactor or microreactor designs, to deliver green manufacturing solutions or new digital tools, in collaboration with other research teams
- assist with dissemination of project results and organisation of innovation and co-design events, with internal and external collaborators
- interact with a number of local, national, and international stakeholders, exploring opportunities for joint competitive funding bids
- make use of installed 'state of the art' infrastructure within UMinho and the region, in particular advanced Deucalion EuroHPC supercomputer, for boosting use of Artificial Intelligence to reaction engineering.
About you:
Our ideal candidate will have:
- previous experience in developing and applying Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to flow systems (macro-scale or microscale)
- background in reaction engineering and/or proven track record of implementing 'first principles' of reaction engineering to advance technological development
- experimental hands-on and ability to validate ML predictions with experimental data
- a strong and world-class background in design or modelling of chemical or biological reactors applied to emergent fields
- deep understanding of interaction between 'first principles' (mass transfer, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and/or reaction or bioreaction kinetics) and design or sustainable and intensified reactors
- excellent communication skills to disseminate research findings to a range of audiences, including subject experts, commercial collaborators and members of the public
- ability to develop a research vision and pursue a world-leading specific research question/hypothesis
- strong time management and teamworking skills
- experience in supervising or co-supervising postgraduate and undergraduate students
- experience in contributing or leading the development and submission of visionary funding applications in the area of the post
- strong ethics and integrity in research
Previous practical or modelling experience applied to intensified reactors/bioreactors for e.g. photobioreactors for microalgae or CO2 storage or nutritional food; photocatalytic reactors for breaking down environmental contaminants or chemical synthesis would be very beneficial as it will be central to the work undertaken in this role.
We welcome applications from both junior (limited or no postdoctoral research experience) and senior (with three or more years of postdoctoral research and/or international experience) candidates.
How to apply:
Please submit applications before midnight (Lisbon/London time) on the submission date shown in the job advert via email to jobs@ceb.uminho.pt, including the job reference in the subject line, the name and contact details of two reviewers (one must be previous line manager or supervisor), and the following three attachments (word or PDF files, max 25 MB for all attachments):
- a cover letter(max. 1 page), explaining your motivations and how you fit to the job specifications and person’s profile for the job under consideration
- a detailed CV (please no photographs), including a narrative section detailing: i) an overview of your own contribution to the work published on five selected publications; ii) your approach in working effectively as part of a team; iii) how you have embedded responsible use of machine learning or Artificial Intelligence in the highlighted publications
- a vision statement(max. 1 page), including: (i) a reflection on your personal development needs and how you wish your career to evolve; (ii) how you propose to contribute to improving Excellence in research and innovations by being part of the REACTORS 5.0 team.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact the ERA Chair holder, Dr Nuno M. Reis at n.m.reis@bath.ac.uk, including the job reference number in the subject line.
What we offer:
You will be offered an inclusive, supporting, and creative environment, supported by the ERA Chair holder, with >20 years of international research and teaching experience in world-leading institutions, who recognises effective teamwork, international networking, and space for career development and wellbeing are core pillars for fostering Excellence, generating impact, and facilitating international mobility of researchers.
We aim at making UMinho an University where difference and mobility is celebrated, respected and encouraged. Our increasingly multicultural teaching and research communities (students and staff) are connected globally, especially with Europe, North America, South America, and Portuguese-speaking countries through several programmes and networks, such as Erasmus+ and MIT-Portugal. We have an excellent international reputation, hosting staff and students from more than 80 different countries and having made a positive commitment towards gender equality and intersectionality through our Gender Equality Plan, which can be accessed through the following link (English version). We truly believe that diversity of experience, perspectives, and backgrounds will lead to a better environment for our employees and students, so we encourage applications from all genders, backgrounds, and communities, particularly from under-represented groups, and value the positive impact that will have on the university. We are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for our students, staff, and community by reinforcing our commitment to inclusive, diverse, and transparent recruitment.
