About the role:

The Chain Florey Predoctoral Fellowship Scheme presents clinical trainees with a unique opportunity to spend 12 months 100% FTE (or 24 months 50% FTE) in fields that range from biomedical discovery science to experimental medicine and translational clinical research at two world-renowned academic institutions, Imperial College and the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS). The Chain Florey Fellowship provides an ideal foundation for those wishing to pursue a career in clinical academia and offer a pathway to subsequent funding opportunities.

You will plan and conduct research, helping you refine your research interests and identify which area best aligns with your clinical background and long-term academic goals. In parallel, you will be developing research collaborations within the College, the LMS and the wider community. You will have the opportunity to develop a competitive application for submission to externally funded Clinical Research Training Fellowship schemes. You will be focusing on your research and will only undertake clinical activity if required by your specialty (usually limited to 0.2 FTE) or your research project.

What we are looking for:

You will need to demonstrate an appropriate skill base and motivation to pursue scientific research, with the desire to progress on to a PhD afterward. With your application, please submit your CV and a 1-2 page cover letter outlining your motivation for applying and the LMS research groups you would be interested in exploring to develop a PhD project.

Essential requirements

  • Practising medic in training in the UK
  • A medical degree
  • Completed Foundation Year Training by the start date of the position
  • Experience of conducting scientific research

What we can offer you:

The Chain Florey Predoctoral Fellowship provides an ideal base for those wishing to pursue a career in clinical academia with excellent opportunities for academic progression (PhD and postdoctoral opportunities), training and mentoring. Fellows with excellent progress will have access to our Chain Florey Clinical Research Training Fellowships and become a Fellow of our Chain Florey cohort.

Further Information

The positions are fixed-term and fully funded for 12 months, with the possibility of transitioning to a PhD for candidates who make excellent progress.

As this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, at the appropriate level, will be required for the successful candidate.

If you require any further details on the role, please check the scheme’s webpage on the LMS website or contact the Chair of the Chain Florey Committee Professor Declan O’Regan (declan.oregan@lms.mrc.ac.uk) or Aurelie Tromp, the Chain Florey Programme Manager (a.tromp@lms.mrc.ac.uk).
