The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and St. Joseph’s Health Care London (St. Joseph’s) invite applications for the position of Chair/Chief/Department Head of the Department of Surgery. The Department of Surgery has over 100 surgeons and scientists, one basic science graduate degree program, and seven Royal College academic training programs, enrolling over 160 trainees. It comprises eight divisions: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Urology. Each division except Paediatric Surgery has an active postgraduate residency training program. There are four sub-units: The Hand and Upper Limb Centre at St. Joseph’s, the Multi-Organ Transplant Program at University Hospital, the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic at Western’s campus, and the Trauma Program at Victoria Hospital.

The Chair/Chief/Department Head will provide vision to expand on the department’s strengths in integrating teaching, research, and evidence into clinical practice with partners. They must be a strong leader, administrator, and communicator, advocating for the department’s mission. They will provide responsible clinical academic leadership within the university and hospital organizations, and collaborate on innovative research aligned with strategic plans.

Both LHSC and St. Joseph’s support training for over 1,800 health professionals annually and are integral to the London community.

The successful candidate must be an accomplished clinician with an MD or equivalent, eligible for certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and licensure in Ontario. Compensation is based on qualifications and includes fee for service, alternate funding, and academic support. An established research and leadership track record is an asset. The position is a full-time continuing Clinical Academic appointment at Associate or Full Professor rank, with an initial five-year term, renewable once, subject to review.
