Chair, Department of Art at Lander University
The Department of Art at Lander University invites applications for the position of Department Chair and as a faculty member in Art or Art Education. Faculty rank, tenure status, and salary are based upon qualifications and experience. The preferred start date is July 1, 2026.
Lander University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the Council of Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The Department offers B.A., B.F.A., M.A.T., and M.F.A. degrees in visual art and concentrations in K-12 teacher certification, 2D Studio, and 3D Studio. Current art studio faculty specialize in ceramics, painting, photography, and sculpture and collaborate with faculty in other departments that offer courses in art history and graphic design. The Department offers a B.A. in Visual Art with K-12 teaching certification as well as an M.A.T. degree in partnership with Lander’s College of Education. Lander’s Art Gallery and Public Sculpture Exhibit showcase work by undergraduate and graduate students each year.
Teaching specialization is open.
Eligible candidates must have:
- a terminal degree [Ph.D., Ed.D., or D.A. in Art Education or an M.F.A. in an area of Studio Art] from a regionally-accredited institution;
- a minimum of six years of full-time university-level teaching experience in a face-to-face format;
- creative and/or scholarly endeavors to merit appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor; and
- university-level leadership experience as program director, coordinator, and/or chair.
Candidates should have credentials to teach a variety of Art Studio or Art Education courses at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as courses related to their areas of specialization.
The teaching load for a Chair is 15 contact hours across fall and spring semesters. Summer teaching is strongly desired and merits additional compensation. Continuation of creative and/or scholarly endeavors is required. Service responsibilities will relate to those of the Chair – as an advocate, leader, and manager of the department as well as working with the Dean. Lander supports on-going training and professional development through its Center for Faculty Excellence.
The Department values leaders with communication skills to convey the value of visual artists to the creative economy; problem solving skills in working with others; a commitment to teaching excellence and student success; a willingness to lead collaborative efforts in recruitment, retention, and overall departmental growth; and a commitment to work effectively with a diverse student population. Experience with assessment as well as partnerships with K-12 schools, technical colleges, and/or community organizations is strongly preferred.
