Albany Medical College seeks an accomplished, visionary physician leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. This exceptional opportunity offers the ability to lead a distinguished academic department within the Albany Med Health System, the only academic health sciences center and Level I trauma center in northeastern New York.
As Chair, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership across the department's clinical, educational, research, and administrative missions while advancing innovative patient care, faculty development, and academic excellence. The Chair will work collaboratively with health system and college leadership to expand specialty services throughout the region and continue building one of the area's premier otolaryngology programs.
About the Department
The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, with 14 board-certified surgeons supported by a robust team of Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists, provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for pediatric and adult patients. As part of the Albany Med Health System, the department serves as a regional tertiary referral center offering advanced diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck. Albany Med is the only location for tertiary and quaternary sub-specialty care for nearly 3 million people across 25 counties in northeastern New York and western New England.
The department includes generalist otolaryngology faculty in addition to fellowship-trained faculty representing a broad range of subspecialties, including:
- Head & Neck Surgical Oncology
- Microvascular Reconstruction
- Otology and Neurotology, including a Cochlear Implant Program
- Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery
- Laryngology and Voice Disorders
- Pediatric Otolaryngology
- Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
- Sleep Surgery
- Audiology and Hearing Services
The department is committed to providing multidisciplinary care through close collaboration with oncology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, pulmonology, allergy, pediatrics, speech-language pathology, audiology, and other specialties throughout Albany Med Health System.
Established as an academic Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery within Albany Medical College in 2021, the program maintains a strong commitment to resident education, medical student teaching, clinical research, and innovation.
Position Overview & Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive strategic vision aligned with the missions of Albany Medical College and Albany Med Health System to advance patient care, education, research, and regional program growth.
- Clinical Leadership: Actively engage in the clinical mission and provide oversight of all clinical operations within the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, ensuring exceptional quality, patient safety, operational efficiency, and access to specialty services across the health system.
- Academic Leadership: Foster excellence in undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, faculty development, and continuing medical education while supporting the department's ACGME-accredited residency program.
- Faculty Recruitment and Development: Recruit, mentor, and retain outstanding faculty while promoting career development, academic advancement, leadership opportunities, and professional satisfaction. Build on current resources and successes by further developing faculty depth in generalist and subspecialty care.
- Research Development: Expand the department's research portfolio by promoting clinical, translational and collaborative research initiatives while supporting scholarly activity and external funding opportunities.
- Program Development: Identify opportunities to expand subspecialty programs, multidisciplinary collaborations, outreach services, and regional referral networks to meet the evolving needs of the communities served.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Strengthen partnerships with departments across Albany Medical College and Albany Med Health System to enhance comprehensive patient care, education, and research. Work with our Vice President of Strategic Marketing to address the impact and strategy required for our department to collaborate successfully with the regional market of otolaryngologists.
- Learning and Working Environment: Foster a culture that promotes a healthy learning and working environment for faculty, trainees, and staff, while supporting equitable access to care.
- Operational Oversight: Provide administrative and financial leadership for the department, including budgeting, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, physician recruitment, and resource allocation.
- Philanthropy: Partner with the Albany Medical College Foundation to cultivate philanthropic support for research, educational initiatives, faculty development and recruitment, and programmatic growth.
Qualifications
- MD or DO with board certification in Otolaryngology
- Eligible for medical licensure in New York State
- Academic rank of Professor or Associate Professor with relevant leadership experience
- Demonstrated leadership within an academic medical center or integrated health system
- Proven record of excellence in clinical care, education, research, faculty development, and administrative leadership
- Experience in strategic planning, financial management, quality improvement, and healthcare operations
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering collaborative teams and an inclusive academic environment
Compensation and Professional Development

- Salary range $560,000-$840,000 depending on subspecialty, academic rank and experience
