The School of Architecture & Design at the Lebanese American University (LAU) invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Architecture & Interior Design, to begin in Fall 2026. This is a tenure-track appointment open to candidates at the rank of Associate Professor or above.
We are seeking an inspiring academic leader with a strong background in architecture and/or interior design, a commitment to academic excellence, and a vision for advancing interdisciplinary design education. The Chair will lead a dynamic department that spans two campuses and includes NAAB- and NASAD-accredited programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide academic and administrative leadership for the Department across both Beirut and Byblos campuses.
- Oversee the implementation and continuous improvement of the undergraduate programs in Architecture and Interior Design, and the graduate program in Islamic Art.
- Ensure continued compliance with NAAB and NASAD accreditation standards.
- Promote a culture of academic excellence, faculty development, research, innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Lead faculty recruitment, reappointments, promotions, sabbaticals, and leaves, in accordance with university policies and procedures.
- Appoint and oversee departmental committees for tasks such as curricular review and strategic initiatives, in coordination with the Associate Chair.
- Supervise departmental staff and make recommendations regarding hiring, evaluation, and promotion.
- Manage departmental budget and resources, considering faculty needs, equipment requests, and strategic priorities.
- Represent the department within the university and to external academic and professional communities.
- Teach in the candidate’s area of expertise (reduced teaching load of 12 credits/year).
Qualifications
- A terminal degree (Master’s in Architecture, Interior Design, or a closely related field is required; a PhD is preferred).
- A strong academic record in teaching, research, and/or professional practice.
- Demonstrated administrative experience in higher education.
- Familiarity with accreditation processes (NAAB and/or NASAD).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- A collaborative and inclusive leadership style.

The Department of Architecture & Interior Design at LAU offers:
- A NAAB-accredited Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.) program.
- A Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design (BFA in Interior Design) program.
- A Master’s of Art in Islamic Art (MA in Islamic Art) program.

Terms of Appointment
Start Date: Fall 2026 (September 1, 2026)
Contract Duration: Initial 3-year term, renewable annually based on performance
Rank: Associate Professor or above (tenure-track)
In the event of non-renewal, the candidate may return to the faculty ranks.
