The Zoonotic and Emerging Disease Research Unit (ZEDRU), which operates out of USDA’s National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (www.usda.gov/nbaf) in Manhattan, KS is seeking a Veterinary Pathologist to join its team. The mission of ZEDRU is to protect the United States from zoonotic and emerging diseases of the highest consequence to animal and public health. Research area focuses include BSL-4 pathogens, such as Nipah virus and Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever virus and other high consequence zoonotic viruses that pose a risk to agriculture and public health. Selected applicant will identify and propose productive research areas and studies, perform independent research to identify, describe, and characterize the pathogenesis of zoonotic and emerging pathogens as well as to identify and evaluate potential control or interventional strategies for these pathogens. The pathologist will work hand in hand with other unit scientists and will be encouraged to partner with other scientists at the facility and externally. ZEDRU performs basic and applied research to elucidate inter- and intra-species transmission of pathogens (pathogen spillover), host-pathogen interactions, and identify virulence factors to aid countermeasure design.
