Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

An opportunity has arisen for a Cleaning Coordinator to join the Facilities Management team at University of Canterbury. In this role you will support the coordination of cleaning operations across assigned areas of campus, helping ensure high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety are maintained.

Working closely with the Operations Supervisor, you will help organise the daily work of cleaning teams, support consistent cleaning practices, and contribute to a positive team environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the coordination of cleaning staff to ensure daily tasks are completed to agreed standards
  • Conducting regular inspections and contributing to monthly quality assurance checks
  • Ensuring cleaning schedules are followed and updated when required
  • Helping coordinate staff coverage and roster adjustments in collaboration with the Operations Supervisor
  • Monitoring start and finish times and supporting team members to follow break schedules
  • Maintaining cleaning equipment and ensuring cleaning cupboards are stocked
  • Reporting equipment faults or maintenance issues promptly
  • Supporting Health & Safety practices and team toolbox meetings
  • Coordinating with other Cleaning Coordinators when responding to urgent situations (e.g. flooding)

This is a practical role in a large campus environment, and there may be times where you support the team with hands-on cleaning tasks when needed.

You take pride in maintaining clean, safe environments and enjoy working with others to get the job done well. You are organised, supportive of your team, and comfortable helping coordinate day-to-day work activities.

We encourage applications from people who bring the following:

  • Experience working in commercial or large-scale cleaning environments
  • Confidence supporting or coordinating the work of a small team
  • Familiarity with a range of professional cleaning equipment and products
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Awareness of Health and Safety practices in cleaning environments
  • A full New Zealand driver’s licence with a clean record
  • NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent qualification)

You will also bring:

  • Reliability and a collaborative approach to working with others
  • Confidence working across multiple buildings or operational areas
  • A commitment to maintaining professional standards and supporting your team

Experience supervising or coordinating cleaning teams is helpful, but we also welcome applicants who are ready to step into a coordination role and demonstrate the capability to support a team.
