About the Department
The mission of the Department of Middle and Secondary Education (MSE) is to engage in research and scholarly activity, teaching, and service in urban environments with people from multiple racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. Degree program offerings include well-established PhD and EdD programs, as well as MAT programs at the middle and secondary levels and MEd programs in STEM education, literacy education, and mathematics education. We also offer a BSE degree program at the middle level. Courses are offered in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. Our nationally and internationally acclaimed faculty are among the leading researchers and teacher educators in their fields. MSE faculty, staff, and students work collaboratively with schools, communities, and organizations locally, nationally, and internationally. Position Description
The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to social studies education at the middle and secondary school levels. The successful applicant will work closely within the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs in secondary and middle-level social studies education. These programs lead to initial teacher certification in grades 6–12 (secondary) and grades 4–8 (middle-level).
Other key responsibilities may include:
- Coordinating, managing, and re-envisioning undergraduate and graduate degree programs
- Advising both undergraduate and graduate students
- Serving as dissertation advisor and committee member for doctoral students within social studies education
- Serving on departmental, college, and university committees
- Teaching courses for undergraduate students exploring careers in education
- Participating in professional organizations and academic conferences
Required Experience
- Experience teaching in middle or secondary public schools
- Experience preparing preservice teachers and/or teacher professional development
- Experience and demonstrated commitment to working with diverse student populations in urban settings
Required Education
Earned doctorate in Social Studies Education or a closely related field
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
- Evidence of expertise in standards-based teaching
- Experience supervising teacher candidates in middle and/or secondary settings
- Strong understanding of current trends and issues in social studies education
- Experience integrating research-based teaching practices
- Experience integrating learning technologies into instruction
- Evidence of scholarly productivity and effectiveness as both a researcher and teacher
- Evidence of success or potential success in securing external funding
- Experience working with professional development schools
