Position Summary:

Reporting directly to the Occupational Therapy Program Director, the Doctoral Capstone Coordinator supports the university in fulfillment of its mission, purpose, and goals. Provides program-specific expertise and is actively engaged in relevant department initiatives. Supports university, campus, and/or departmental goals in order to assure compliance with programmatic accreditation and/or licensure, internal consistency, and graduate outcomes that meet student learning, workplace, and placement expectations. Provides professional leadership and support and serves as an educator, role model, mentor, and facilitator. Assists students in developing, refining, and enacting a capstone project, ensuring doctoral-level academic rigor, fulfillment of standards, and professional relevance. Evaluates student performance and ability to integrate didactic knowledge, evidence, theory, professional communication, and reasoning with the planning and implementation of the capstone project. Serves as a liaison between the occupational therapy program and capstone sites and is responsible for the selection, orientation, implementation, and evaluation of capstone sites, and nurtures the ongoing development of professional collaboration. Fosters professional collegiality with capstone project mentors by providing training, education, and support throughout the capstone project process. Focuses extensively on facilitating student learning associated with prescribed course and program learning outcomes. Creates an educational environment that fosters innovation, responsiveness, and accountability. Actively and substantively participates in the assessment of student learning activities to maximize the potential for students to learn what is necessary to meet prescribed outcomes. Vigorously upholds a culture of academic integrity.

Position Responsibilities:

INSTRUCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Fulfills assigned teaching load
• Participates in and contributes to assessment activities of courses/curriculum and program via a continuous improvement plan as set forth by the University
• Demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching and the teaching/learning process, and for individual students
• Facilitates student learning in accordance with prescribed course and program learning outcomes
• Regularly contributes to the improvement or upgrading of class materials and syllabi
• Follows established protocols for providing timely feedback, academic advising, and assessment of student learning
• Keeps regular approved office hours (for FT faculty)
• Mentors students and faculty as assigned by the department/program dean/chair
• Explores scholarly research to improve teaching and instruction
• Begins to explore cross-disciplinary approaches to instruction

SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES:

• Attends professional development activities each year, as agreed upon with the supervisor in the associate development plan
• Selects a minimum of one of the following activity areas: publishing & writing, acting as contributor to textbooks, presenting at conferences or educational trainings, attending test-writing or accreditation activities, serving on thesis dissertation committee, or other agreed upon professional activity
• OR
• Identifies and applies specialized research or activities related to teaching, assigned teaching area(s), or may contribute to the scholarly community/knowledge of the discipline

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND SERVICE:

• Attends Department, School, and University meetings/councils as arranged/approved by the program director
• Develops connections within the professional community, both inside and outside the University/Occupational Therapy program
• Contributes/demonstrates ongoing service in at least one of the following areas:
  • Community or Public Service
  • Profession (member of professional organization)
  • University/Occupational Therapy program

PROGRAM SPECIFIC:

• Sites and Contracts: Identify, develop, and maintain capstone sites and contracts that support the culminating project requirements
• Courses: Develop curriculum and content for capstone courses, capstone experiences, and capstone projects
• Specific Experiences and Projects: Oversee individual student experiences and projects, develop specific capstone objectives in collaboration with the capstone sites and capstone mentors
• Students: Mentor students in the capstone experience and project, and evaluate students' performance and ability to integrate didactic and capstone learning experiences
• Capstone Mentors: Train, supervise, maintain communication with, and evaluate capstone mentors to ensure compliance with capstone objectives and completion requirements

Experience & Educational Background:

EDUCATION

• Must hold a doctoral degree awarded by an institution that is accredited by a USDE-recognized institutional accrediting agency
• Should provide a documented background in educational methodology consistent with teaching assignments, including but not limited to education theory and practice, or current concepts relative to specific subjects he or she will be teaching, or current clinical practice experience, or distance education techniques and delivery

EXPERIENCE

• Two or more years of teaching experience (either adjunct, full, or part-time) in an ACOTE (Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education) accredited Occupational Therapy program.
• Instructional experience must be at institutions that are Title IV funding eligible
• Minimum of four years of experience in clinical practice, with at least two years of experience in supervising internship students

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

• Certified by NBCOT (The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy) as an OTR (Registered Occupational Therapist) required
• Licensed as an Occupational Therapist in the State of New York is required
• Must meet and maintain the qualifications and standards set forth by any accreditation body that Yeshiva University is accredited by or in the process of obtaining accreditation from, for the area of expertise and expectations of the faculty member, as set forth in regulatory documents and any professional certifications deemed necessary to meet the requirements of the teaching role
• Experience with online learning management systems to further engage the student learning process is desirable

Skills & Competencies:

Knowledge of state, federal, and local laws/regulations relating to programs, governmental compliance, and other regulatory standards.

• Ability to use effective communication skills, both oral and written, including presentations, and effective listening skills
• Ability to use creative facilitation and conflict resolution skills to resolve difficult and sensitive issues
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Products, especially Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and other MS Office products as needed.
