Student Services, Schulich School of Music
Position Summary:
The Schulich School of Music is looking for peer mentors to provide support, encouragement and guidance to newer students in the Schulich community. The mentor team will support the student body by providing advising and referral services over email and during drop-in advising hours. Mentors may be paired with one or more mentees and meet with them throughout the semester, discussing topics such as course selection, working, studying, practicing, making friends, exploring Montreal or whatever feels natural!
Mentors will receive training for referral, active listening, cultural bias and more, starting in the last week of August and continuing through the fall semester.
We strongly encourage all interested returning students to apply! We are actively seeking applications from students who have faced systemic barriers to education. We are also seeking applications from Francophone Students.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Attending training sessions
- Monitoring the peer mentor email inbox and answering student questions
- Group meetings and check-ins with other mentors
- Reaching out to mentees and meeting with them monthly
- Providing feedback and commentary on the peer mentoring program
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
- You must be a returning Schulich School of Music undergraduate. We will also consider current McGill graduate students who completed an undergraduate degree at the Schulich School of Music.
- Commit 1-3 hours per week, even during high-stress periods
- Desire to listen empathetically and provide support and encouragement to newer students
- Ability to work with people from different backgrounds
- Experience with mentoring, outreach or active listening (an asset)
- Be a returning Schulich School of Music undergraduate or graduate student (who completed the B.Mus. program here)
- Be in good academic standing.
