Clinical Counselor II
Position Summary:
The Clinical Counselor II for the Rice Counseling Center provides clinical services and assumes leadership in specific programmatic, supervisory, or outreach areas. They will handle more complex cases, mentor junior clinicians, and be actively involved in crisis response and center initiatives.

Workplace Requirements:
This position is exclusively on-site, requiring all duties to be performed in person at Rice University, 30 hours per week, 10 months per year, with a schedule determined in conjunction with the Director. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
Minimum Requirements:
- Master's degree in counseling, social work, or psychology
- Independent licensure in a relevant discipline (e.g., LPC, LCSW, LMFT, Licensed Psychologist)
- 3+ years of post-licensure clinical experience, preferably in college or university settings
- No substitutions for education or experience allowed
Skills:
- Proficiency in individual, group, and couples counseling with young adult populations
- Strong diagnostic and assessment abilities using DSM-5 criteria and evidence-based practices
- Crisis intervention and suicide/risk assessment skills
- Competence in trauma-informed, strengths-based, and culturally responsive approaches
- Demonstrated commitment to serving historically marginalized and underrepresented groups
- Ability to maintain clinical documentation in compliance with ethical and legal standards
- Adherence to professional ethics, confidentiality, and licensure regulations
- Sound judgment and decision-making in complex or high-stress situations
- Ability to manage a caseload efficiently while maintaining quality of care
- Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse student body
- Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
Preferences:
- Doctoral degree
- 4 years of demonstrated experience working with diverse and underserved populations
- Proven ability to supervise and mentor early-career clinicians or students
Essential Functions:
- Independently provide individual, couples, and group therapy, including for complex mental health concerns (e.g., trauma, identity distress, substance use)
- Conduct risk assessments and manage crisis situations, including participation in after-hours on-call coverage
- Maintain clinical documentation in compliance with ethical and legal standards
- Supervise and provide consultation to Clinical Counselor I staff, trainees, or interns
- Develop and lead specialized outreach and psychoeducational initiatives tailored to diverse student groups
- Consult with faculty, parents, and staff regarding student concerns, in accordance with applicable privacy laws and institutional policies
- Contribute to program evaluation, intake/referral workflow refinement, and clinical quality improvement efforts
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions:
- Provide consultation and referrals to campus and community resources
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners in supporting student well-being
- Meet with the Clinical Director of the Rice Counseling Center weekly
- Supervise practicum students
- Must be able to take on-call evenings and weekends on rotation
- Report utilization numbers to the Associate Dean of Students when needed
