Clinical Education Faculty, School of Law

The University of St. Thomas School of Law (Minnesota) invites applications for one or more full-time faculty positions in the Department of Clinical Education, beginning in Fall 2026. We will consider applicants in all subject areas and invite applicants to propose the type of clinic they are interested in directing. We will consider both entry-level and lateral candidates, and we are open to tenure-track, tenured, and non-tenure-track appointments.

We seek candidates who are, or have the potential to become, excellent teachers and scholars and who will also contribute to our distinctive mission as a Catholic law school. The School of Law offers an innovative curriculum emphasizing professional formation and the education of the whole person. The school has earned numerous recognitions for excellence in practical training, scholarly engagement, teaching, and community building, including:

  • #3 for best practical training (National Jurist, 2025, top 3 every year since 2014)
  • #17 in downloads per paper in Social Science Research Network (as of June 22, 2025)
  • #8 for best value private law school (National Jurist, 2023)
  • #8 for “quality of student life” (Princeton Review, 2021, top 10 nearly every year since 2008)

(See: https://www.stthomas.edu/law/about/rankings/)

The School of Law’s commitments to scholarship, teaching, service, and community are inspired by our distinctive mission. As a Catholic law school, we are dedicated “to integrating faith and reason in the search for truth through a focus on morality and social justice.” We seek candidates, of diverse faiths and beliefs, who can contribute to this mission.

The mission also commits the School of Law to the inherent dignity of all people; to equal opportunity policies and practices; and to an environment that is diverse and inclusive. We actively seek to attract, retain, and develop faculty from all backgrounds to enhance our learning community and offer our students varied perspectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must possess a J.D. or equivalent academic degree. Candidates for a tenure-track position must have strong academic credentials and must demonstrate strong scholarly potential and a commitment to excellence in teaching. Lateral tenure-track or tenured candidates must also demonstrate an outstanding scholarly record, a history of excellence in teaching, and substantial service. This hire will be expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda, teach approximately 10-12 credits per academic year (if a tenure-track or tenured appointment), and engage in both internal and external service.

Candidates for a non-tenure-track faculty position are not expected to have a history of scholarly publications or to demonstrate strong scholarly potential but may be expected to teach more than 10-12 credits per academic year. All other expectations for this faculty position are the same as those specified for a tenure-track position.

How to Apply: We will review candidate materials posted in the AALS Faculty Appointments Register (FAR). We also invite applications from candidates not participating in the FAR, including any interested lateral candidates. To ensure full consideration of their application, candidates not participating in the FAR should apply by August 22, 2025, and lateral candidates should apply as soon as possible.

All application materials must be submitted online: https://www.stthomas.edu/jobs/.

The application process begins with creating an applicant profile. On the profile page, please upload the following:

Upload a copy of your curriculum vitae. If available, upload evidence of effective teaching. If applying for a tenure-track or tenured position, upload scholarly agenda and/or evidence of scholarly record.

Once you create and submit the applicant profile, you will be taken to the job specific application. On the application:

Optional: Copy/paste a cover letter, detailing your interest in the position and the type of clinic you are interested in directing. Complete the reference section of the application by providing contact information for three professional references. No references will be contacted without first getting the permission of the candidate.

Review of applications will begin in August and continue until the position is filled. Initial screening interviews will be conducted via Zoom or a comparable remote platform. For further questions, please contact the Appointments Chair, Professor Rachel Moran, at rmoran@stthomas.edu.

Location: St. Thomas School of Law is located in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota’s most populous city. The school is within walking distance of employers, courts, and mentors, including most of the major Minnesota law firms, the federal district court, multiple state courthouses, Target’s international headquarters, and many other businesses.
