Clinical Information Analyst Intermediate

The Clinical Quality Reporting (CQR) team is part of the Michigan Medicine (MM) Quality Department and provides data abstraction services for a wide range of MM projects, including core measures, Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQIs), and clinical registries. Our clinical team’s broad expertise and strong stakeholder relationships continue to drive the expansion of our services.
Job Summary:
Under minimal supervision, the Clinical Information Analyst Intermediate serves as a key member of the CQR team. The role is responsible for abstracting clinical patient level data to meet mandatory reporting requirements for assigned projects, which may include:
- The Joint Commission (TJC) & Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) core measures, including eCQMs
- Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) CQIs
- Pediatric Acute Care Cardiology Collaborative (PAC3)
- Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium (PC4)
- Children's Hospitals Neonatal Consortium (CHNC)
- Vermont Oxford Network (VON)
- Virtual Pediatric Systems (VPS)
- Additional assigned programs and initiatives
This intermediate-level position reports to the Manager of CQR. Core responsibilities include performing timely and accurate clinical data abstraction, preparing standard and ad hoc reports, and partnering with multidisciplinary teams to advance clinical quality. The role also provides expert consultation, supports performance improvement efforts, and contributes to organizational quality initiatives.
70% - Clinical Data Abstraction and Quality Review
- Under occasional supervision, performs timely, accurate abstraction and validation of assigned clinical quality measures using clinical judgment and understanding of measure specifications.
- Under occasional supervision, conducts routine data quality reviews, identify trends and improvement opportunities, and support development of action plans.
15% - Reporting, Analysis, & Performance Improvement
- Under occasional supervision, analyzes large datasets and prepare clear, concise communications to inform decision-making.
- Under occasional supervision, develops and presents high-level reports identifying improvement opportunities and recommended next steps.
- Under occasional supervision, collaborates with clinicians across disciplines to enhance performance and develop innovative visual metrics (e.g., dashboards).
- Under occasional supervision, provides clinical expertise and support teams in implementing improvement strategies, education, and follow-up.
10% - Electronic Data & Systems Improvement
- Under occasional supervision, works collaboratively with MM Quality Analytics and Information Technology Services (ITS) to design and implement electronic data resources that reduce manual abstraction workload.
5% - Additional Duties
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in nursing, applied science, or other clinical field.
- At least two (2) years of clinical bedside experience in a pediatric setting with demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret processes, outcomes, and cost of care.
- Ability to reliably attend virtual meetings (Teams/Zoom).
- Ability to attend occasional in-person meetings in the Ann Arbor area, with notice.
- Demonstrated success working within interdisciplinary teams.
- Experience with electronic data management/analysis tools (e.g., Excel).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently within a team–oriented environment.
- Strong ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast–paced, evolving environment with competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Recent critical care experience, ideally pediatric.
- Experience with clinical data abstraction and reporting.
- Knowledge of EPIC EHR, preferably MM's MiChart.
- Familiarity with clinical quality concepts (e.g., best practice alerts, guideline development, quality improvement methods).
- Experience collaborating with various clinical disciplines and specialties.
- Demonstrated understanding of process improvement.
- Experience with Tableau or Power BI.
- Knowledge of Lean principles and associated tools/techniques.
