Clinical Research Billing Compliance Specialist

Job Summary

Join a collaborative and mission-driven clinical research team within the Department of OB/GYN, where your expertise will directly support innovative studies that improve women's health. As a Research Billing Specialist, you will play a critical role at the intersection of research, finance, and compliance-ensuring clinical trials are built on accurate, sustainable, and compliant budgets from the start.

In this role, you'll partner closely with investigators, study teams, and sponsors to analyze complex research protocols, develop detailed clinical trial budgets, and lead budget negotiations. You'll gain deep insight into how clinical research operates across major healthcare systems-including UW Hospital and Clinics, UW Medical Foundation, and UnityPoint Health Meriter-while helping ensure studies meet institutional, state, and federal regulatory standards.

* This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements internal quality control processes to ensure calendar and budget builds reflect accurate trial information and comply with research billing rules
  • Performs Medicare coverage analysis for complex research studies to promote and confirm compliance with billing rules and regulations. Works with study teams to ensure compliance
  • Interprets complex clinical trial protocols while applying expertise in research billing rules, clinical workflows, sponsor requirements and electronic system capabilities to configure and review study calendars and budget setup for clinical trials
  • Oversees research billing compliance activities to ensure unit is in full compliance with institutional, regional, and federal research billing compliance rules and regulations. Advises researchers related to proper set up and execution of billing activities for patients on clinical trials
  • Provides training and resources related to research billing to study teams
  • Provides expert guidance when issues arise during reconciliation of unit patient charges to ensure appropriate billing. Identifies and implements changes in clinical trial protocol calendar set up as needed

Compensation

The starting salary for the position is $65,000 annually; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of employment experience in Clinical Trial Budgeting and Medicare Coverage Analysis is required by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with budgeting and/or post-award management.
  • Experience in a medical and/or research setting.
  • Experience with medical or insurance billing preferred.

Education

Associates degree required; focus in finance or accounting preferred.
