Contract Type:Fixed-Term/Contract

Placed On: 12th January 2026

We wish to recruit an enthusiastic clinical research fellow to work within the Department for Women’s and Children’s Health. This thriving department within the Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences plays host to international experts in maternal and neonatal health.

You will be working alongside Professor Andrew Weeks and Dr Abi Merriel. Both are clinical academics and Honorary Consultant Obstetricians at Liverpool Women’s Hospital with broad ranging interests in all aspects of obstetric care from development of new technologies through to randomised trials of complex interventions.

The successful candidate will conduct studies to investigate the role of oral bicarbonate in the prevention of adverse fetal and maternal outcomes. This will include a systematic review as well as studies in pregnant women both antenatally and in labour to assess the effect of a novel oral bicarbonate product on lactate response to exercise and labour. The work will build up to an application for a full randomised trial.

The successful candidate will be part of the University and clinical research team. It is anticipated that the candidate will register for a PhD with the reduced staff fees (£2,400 pa) to be paid by the student.

All academic staff are obliged to take part in the formal and informal teaching and assessment of students as directed by the Dean of School. Staff are also obliged to attend Academic Unit meetings and participate in training courses offered by the School or University. They are also obliged to retain an honorary contract with Liverpool Women’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The post is available for 3 years.
