Co-Leader of Parent Advisory Group for Children's Palliative Care

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated parent of a child with a life-limiting condition to co-lead a parent advisory group of around 20 parents of children with life-limiting conditions or medical complexity. The role is open to parents currently caring for a child with a life-limiting condition and bereaved parents. The post is part time (20% FTE) for 2 years initially and is funded by the True Colours Trust.

We are looking for someone who can make a distinctive contribution to the Cicely Saunders Institute and our growing children’s palliative care research group and drive forward collaborative, sustainable high quality and impactful PPI. Our aim is inclusive involvement that celebrates diversity and maximises opportunities for the public and community to influence our research.

The primary responsibility will be to co-lead a parent advisory group of around 20 parents of children with life-limiting conditions or medical complexity. The role includes supporting and facilitating patient and public involvement in children’s palliative care by providing advice and support for researchers, clinicians and public contributors and organisation of public involvement activities with researchers and public contributors. You should have excellent communication, collaboration skills, facilitation skills and organisation skills.

We will ensure you are well supported in the role, and that you have flexibility around your caring responsibilities.

The post-holder will work with Dr Bethan Page and Professor Lorna Fraser and the wider children’s palliative care research group.

The job is a remote contract, with a travel budget for occasional in person meetings and events.

This is a part time post (7 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 31st August 2027.

Essential criteria

  1. Experience as a parent of a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition (this includes bereaved parents)
  2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong facilitation skills, with sensitivity to the emotional needs of the parent group
  3. Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, with public members, researchers and external networks
  4. Sensitivity, a high level of awareness of confidentiality, and general tact and diplomacy
  5. Strong organisational and planning skills, with a proven ability to coordinate and deliver projects
  6. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  7. Committed to advancing equality, diversity and inclusivity in all aspects of work

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of public involvement in research, including advising researchers and facilitating public contributors
  2. Proven ability to share research findings in accessible formats for diverse audience, including through summary reports, blogs and oral presentations
