College Master
The Residential College system
The Residential College (RC) system is a comprehensive community-based educational platform that embodies the University’s 4-in-1 education model and student-centered philosophy of whole-person education. UM’s RC system provides students with an experiential curriculum of residential college education designed to promote whole-person education, enabling them to position themselves as individuals with firm roots in Macao, while at the same time being committed to participating in the development of the Greater Bay Area, as well as integrating themselves into national development while reaching out to the world. Living with the students in a residential college, the College Master will implement the UM’s model of RC education. More details about the Residential Colleges are available at: https://rc.um.edu.mo/.
The College Master
In alignment with UM’s Residential College education model, the College Master provides leadership to an individual college in advancing its mission as a dynamic academic and social community dedicated to residential college education and the whole‑person development of students. Reporting to the Vice Rector (Student Affairs), the College Master is responsible for overseeing the effective implementation of the five educational measures within the college, with the objective of cultivating and enhancing students’ designated learning competencies. The College Master works closely with the Associate Master and Resident Fellows in planning, coordinating, and delivering educational activities/programmes in accordance with UM’s Residential College education framework and the University’s strategic direction. The College Master also provides administrative leadership to the college office and supervises college staff to ensure the efficient operation of the Residential College. While English is the working language of the appointment, successful applicants must be able to function comfortably and effectively in a linguistically diverse environment in which the majority of staff and students are Chinese speakers using Cantonese and/or Mandarin. The College Master is normally a senior scholar in his or her field of specialisation and may continue to engage in teaching and research activities. Where appropriate, the appointee may be considered for concurrent affiliation with an academic unit. The initial appointment will be for a term of up to three years, with renewal subject to mutual agreement.
In particular, the candidates should have the following credentials:
- An earned doctoral degree, preferably obtained from a reputable university;
- Candidates at the rank of Full Professor with well‑balanced experience in teaching, research, and service; or candidates with at least ten years of distinguished professional experience relevant to residential college or collegiate education comparable to UM’s Residential College model;
- Demonstrated experience in student services, with a strong commitment to and advocacy for holistic, whole‑person education;
- Proven administrative and management experience in a higher education institution;
- A strong record of publications or scholarly contributions in the area of residential college or collegiate education is highly desirable;
- Recognised standing and social influence within local and/or regional communities is highly desirable.
