Job Description

The Department of English at Virginia Tech invites applications for a Collegiate Assistant Professor of Literary Studies and Fiction Writing. We seek a colleague with the potential for excellence in teaching across literature and creative writing courses as well as a strong publication record (or potential for such) in literary studies or creative writing. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the department’s programs in literature and creative writing; courses in the creative writing MFA program may be assigned depending on the candidate’s qualifications and departmental need. The standard teaching load is 3/3.

About The Department of English at Virginia Tech

We are a vibrant community of scholars studying and teaching across a broad array of fields related to literature, language, and writing. We offer undergraduate programs in literature, creative writing, technical and scientific communication, and language science, an MFA program in creative writing, and a PhD program in Rhetoric and Writing.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD/ MFA in English or Creative Writing by time of appointment, expected to be August 10, 2026
  • Evidence of teaching excellence in literature, creative writing, or both.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of publication in literary studies or creative writing
  • Teaching experience in fiction writing, comics and graphic novels, British literature after 1800, or contemporary fiction and poetry.
  • As the Department of English publishes an undergraduate research journal, Philologia, and supports the minnesota review, candidates with experience in digital publishing (particularly in collaboration with students) are especially welcome.
