The Department of Psychiatry is based on the Warneford Hospital site in Oxford – a friendly, welcoming place of work with an international reputation for excellence. The Department has a substantial research programme, with major funding from Medical Research Council (MRC), Wellcome Trust and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and provides highly rated medical training in psychiatry. The Head of Department is Professor Belinda Lennox.

Reporting to Professor Kamaldeep Bhui you will play a key role in shaping and delivering the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Thames Valley’s communications strategies, leading high-quality research communications to maximise impact, influence and visibility with diverse stakeholders and the public.

About the Role

The post is funded on a fixed-term basis from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2031 and is based in the Department of Psychiatry at the Warneford Hospital. This post is available on a flexible basis, with the option of hybrid by arrangement (minimum on site working 3 days/week)

You will lead the development and implementation of communications strategies for ARC Thames Valley, ensuring alignment with research themes and priorities. You will advise ARC leadership on communications best practice, evaluate the effectiveness of communications activity using data and stakeholder feedback, and contribute to continuous improvement across all channels.

You will manage and oversee the production of high-quality research communications, including impact reports, case studies, newsletters, press releases, infographics and multimedia content. You will provide strategic guidance on research messaging to ensure accessibility for policymakers, funders and the public, and you will support researchers to engage effectively with non-specialist audiences.

You will act as a focal point for media relations; handling press enquiries in liaison with the Public Affairs Directorate and supporting researchers in working with journalists. You will also lead high-profile campaigns and stakeholder engagement activities, develop and maintain relationships with external partners including NIHR and government bodies, and represent the ARC across University-wide and external communications networks

About You

You will be educated to degree level or have equivalent professional experience, with extensive experience in a communications role involving significant responsibility, ideally within a scientific, health or research-related setting. You will have proven experience of developing and implementing strategic communications plans aligned with organisational priorities.

You will have strong expertise in digital communications, content strategy and website management, alongside excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience producing creative, accessible and engaging content. You will also have experience supporting communications-related training and development to upskill others.

You will bring experience of stakeholder engagement and relationship management, including working with funders, policymakers and media, as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills. You will be confident managing complex, long-term communications projects such as web development, branding or digital transformation initiatives.
