Job Description Summary

The Community Service Officer will unlock and lock buildings as needed, provide relief or fill-in for Dispatch as needed, write and submit reports, provide cart or vehicle transportation as needed, direct traffic, deliver/pick up vehicles for maintenance or cleaning. They will patrol parking facilities, buildings, and university grounds to report any unusual activities or circumstances, assist in bicycle licensing, issue loss prevention notices, and issue bicycle citations. They may be asked to view/review camera footage. A Community Service Officer will host/assist with Public Safety demonstrations, Table Events, and/or presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure buildings are locked and secure as appropriate and respond to building alarms
  • Patrol parking facilities, buildings, and university grounds by means of foot, cart, and bike patrol, to report any unusual activities or circumstances
  • Write and submit reports involving, but not limited to, bicycle thefts, vandalism, destruction of property, lost property, and other incidents as needed by the department
  • Provide First Aid/CPR in emergency situations
  • Provide transportation to Students, Faculty, Staff, and guests via cart or vehicle
  • Monitor and be familiar with video surveillance cameras, recordings, and playback
  • Provide relief or fill-in at Dispatch as needed
  • Direct traffic, crowd control, and Crossing Guard duty
  • Provide information/assistance to Visitors, Faculty, Staff, and Students
  • Work Special Events when needed
  • Host or assist with Public Safety fire drills, table events, and/or presentations
  • Make recommendations, when appropriate, which reduce or eliminate conditions that lend themselves to unsafe conditions or expose University and personal property to theft or damage
  • Observe safety hazards and report them to the proper persons for correction
  • Enforce university parking regulations and ensure that abandoned or illegally parked vehicles are reported and dispositioned appropriately
  • Assist in bicycle licensing, loss prevention notices, and citations
  • Receive and properly secure found property

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Experience working in a professional office with multiple demands
  • Correct usage of English spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Ability to work under pressure, exercise good judgement, and make sound decisions in emergency situations
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and elicit information from upset and irate persons
  • Excellent communication skills to work with diverse groups both inside and outside of the university
  • Able to work various work shifts
  • Must be able to provide quality customer service
  • General clerical experience with the ability to learn and interpret policies and procedures of the department and university
  • Technical skills to learn enterprise systems and departmental tools
  • Able to work with highly confidential information
  • Ability to learn geographic features within the area and give geographic directions upon request
  • Sufficient hand-eye coordination to perform repetitive movements in an office atmosphere with multiple demands
  • Skills in the operation of a motor vehicle under emergency and other public safety related conditions, with the ability to understand and follow university safe driving procedures, and the California Vehicle Code
  • Accurate report writing skills, including the proper use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Ability to quickly assess a situation and determine the appropriate course of action
  • Ability to interpret and follow the university and OSHA safety codes, regulations, and procedures
  • Ability to communicate clearly in a helpful, effective, and professional manner in person, by telephone, and by two-way radio
  • Legible handwriting such that all logs and reports can be easily read by others
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Knowledge of campus buildings, roadways, parking lots, fire and intrusion alarm systems, and building and panel system keys
  • Enforce parking regulations in parking lots and in other areas as necessary and required
  • Ensure that abandoned or illegally parked vehicles are impounded
  • Issue parking permits and bicycle licenses
  • Must possess current first aid and CPR certification
  • Must have and maintain in good standing, valid California Driver License
  • Must successfully pass a medical examination provided by the departments outside vendor

Desired Qualifications

  • 911 Dispatcher CA POST certification highly desired
  • Knowledge of City laws and regulations and University policies as applicable to the Public Safety function
  • Knowledge of campus buildings, roadways, parking lots, fire and intrusion alarm systems and keys
  • Knowledge of Clery Act, Title IX reporting
