University Police Department (UPD), Southern Command invites applications for Community Service Officers (CSO) (Classification - Security Officer, Title Series - 11.260). We appreciate your interest in employment at our growing division.

ROLE of the POSITION

UPD is conducting a continuous recruitment for current and future openings for Community Service Officers (CSO). Positions may be assigned to any campus to include the College of Southern Nevada, Desert Research Institute, Nevada State College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Under direction of the Community Service Supervisor, this position will perform a variety of security related tasks for various NSHE campuses under UPD, Southern Command.

PROFILE

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) was established in 1865 and is currently comprised of two doctoral-granting universities, a state college, four comprehensive community colleges and one environmental research institute. The public system of higher education in Nevada is governed by the Board of Regents serving over 100,000 students and 15,000 employees.

UPD, Southern Command, is a full service category I law enforcement agency that serves the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the College of Southern Nevada, the Desert Research Institute and Nevada State College. The department consists of 113 employees and has responsibility for the public safety needs of 80,000 students, faculty and staff over an 800 square mile service area. Law enforcement operations consists of full and part time sworn peace officers, a full service 9-1-1 Center, K-9 operations; emergency management operations with a fully functional EOC and oversight of major special events hosting more than a million visitors a year to various events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

CSO responsibilities will include but not be limited to providing security for State buildings and grounds; providing protective services to buildings and occupants; enforcing applicable laws, rules, regulations and policies; maintaining security of assigned buildings or facilities and surrounding property by conducting visual surveillance through camera monitors or direct observation; monitoring State/NSHE property, displays and individuals entering and leaving buildings and take appropriate action according to department policy. Patrolling buildings and grounds, checking windows, locks, doors and security systems for damage or possible breach of security; following established procedures and guidelines when security or safety violations occur and other general duties as assigned.

CSO's are non-sworn. CSO's primary function during any criminal response is to observe and report. CSO's do not detain or pursue suspects, and shall not apply "hands-on" techniques unless in the event of protecting one's self and/or others from immediate harm, or when directed by a supervisor and/or law enforcement personnel and is deemed safe to do so.

JOB DUTIES

  • Maintains constant radio communication; continuously monitors radio traffic for pertinent information and responds to all calls addressed to them.
  • Ability to work alone, without direct supervision.
  • Stand unassisted for long periods of time.
  • Assist in giving medical attention to those that require it (Certified in CPR, defibrillator, and first aid).
  • Notify UPD of all emergency situations including fire alarms, fights, disturbances, medical emergencies, etc.
  • Relay knowledge of emergency situations to responding police units.
  • Provide walking safety escorts as directed or requested.
  • Assist with unlocks for students or employees that are locked out of a space for which they are authorized access.
  • Collect Found Property and properly secure or release it.
  • Provide assistance to other Campus Departments (i.e. Special Events, Vendor access to Facilities, etc.).
  • Complete walking foot patrol of Buildings and Grounds, checking for safety and security concerns.
  • Submit work orders for issues observed to need repair (i.e. Lights that are out, damaged property, etc.).
  • Assist with checks of emergency call boxes.
  • Assist with "jump starts" for disabled vehicles.
  • Respond to other non-confrontational calls for service as directed.
  • Engage with community members and participate in community outreach events.
  • Observe, report and check on the welfare of individuals.
  • Complete Information Reports for property intake, or for incidents as requested.
  • Immediately report any injury sustained while on duty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by a Supervisor or Superior Officers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience in public contact work which included applying and implementing rules, regulations or established policies. (See Special Requirements)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • Some positions required working on evening, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • A valid driver's license is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Some positions require certification in CPR at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Some positions require first aid certification at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Schedules are subject to change based on organizational needs.

SALARY

Grade 27, Step 1, salary $46,207.44. "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
