Computational and experimental investigations to improve the subsonic characteristics of delta wing

About the Project

Summary of the proposed research:

It was widely evidenced that delta wings are more suitable for supersonic flights due to their high sweep, vortex lift generation, and wave drag reduction. When it comes to low-speed aerodynamic performance, the delta wing is weak. This is due to a number of issues such as low lift coefficient levels and pitching stability problems. Although delta wings are designed for high-speed flight, it is still required to take off and land at subsonic speeds. Hence, in this research project, these issues will be solved by modifying the delta wing design. The design improvement will be achieved by delaying the flow separation and modifying the levels of control surface effectiveness at subsonic speeds. A range of computational and experimental investigations will be carried out using ANSYS and wind tunnel equipment, to capture the existing problems, implement and analyse the solutions and validate them for accuracy. These investigations will include related aerodynamic, flight dynamic and structural analyses. Throughout the research procedure, the R programming language will be used to cure the data obtained and analyse it and finally, a probability model will be developed to identify the appropriate design range based on the lift and control surface operation requirements. This improved delta wing design with the R probability model will help the researchers overcome the hurdles in the future supersonic passenger flight design.

The expected start dates are January and April 2026.

Entry Requirements:

BEng (first or upper second class) in Aeronautical/Aerospace or related engineering course – Essential.

MSc/MEng (distinction or merit) in Aeronautical/Aerospace or related engineering course – Desirable.

Experience in ANSYS Fluent or/and FEA simulations – Desirable.

Interest in R modelling – Essential. The supervisory team will support the research scholar to gain the required R programming skills.

The standard minimum IELTS Academic requirement is 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each band. Some International students are also required to meet UKVI requirements for the appropriate study visa. A valid ATAS certificate (where required) must be secured as a prerequisite to enrolment.
